They'll fit, but why not get the right size?

Bad idea! Go 245/40/17!! That will fill the gat and look nice n wide without the rubbing! The 50 is a bit high!!

Your going the wrong direction. The factory Michelins are 25.6" and the 245/40-17 you're recommending is only 24.7" tall and they would look like roller skate wheels if installed on the TL and the gap would be considerably wider. I sound like a broken record, go with 245/45-17 at 25.7". Just an FYI, the 235/50-17 are tall, 26.25".

You know, you posted this before and I didn't "get it" right away.

What you're saying (and maybe what others besides me have been missing) is that a "normal" 235/45-17 tire is about 25.3" overall diameter. BUT the OE 235/45-17 is actually 25.6" diameter.

25.6" diameter (the slightly tall OE 235/45-17 size) is CLOSER to the diameter of most "normal" 245/45-17's (25.7" diameter).

I know at times I get carried away with tire dimensions as most just need them to move the car from point A to point B, but one must try and get the most bang for their buck and be comparable to the OE tire height.

Just for example, using a 235/45-17 all season tire:
OE included in the following:
Wear rating 260-740
Speed ratings H,V,W,Y
Load rating 93-97
Section width 9.2"-9.6"
Tread width 7.5"-8.6"
Diameter 25.3"-25.6"

Hard to believe that within a specific all season tire size there can be so much disparity, especially in the wear rating, 260-740, and also the tread width, 7.5"-8.6", 1.1" per tire difference and that equates to a total of 4.4" more rubber on the ground.

Before anyone mentions that the wear rating isn't based on an industry standard, let me say that although this is true, it will be a safe bet to assume that a tire with a 740 rating will see much longer life than one with a 260 rating.

The 235 is the width, and the 50 is the hight. It will look like roller skates leaving the wimpy 235, vs the 245 witch will fill the rim better! The hight is up to the user, if you want it to look like a truch, then go with the 50's. Better off, go to a good tire shop and ask for their feedback regarding width vs hight!!

Thought I'd post the 245/45-17 all season tire for comparison, keeping in mind the 235/45-17 OE Michelin dimensions in ():
Wear rating 160/560 (300)
Speed ratings H,V,W,Y (W)
Load rating 94-97 (93)
Section width 9.4"-9.7" (9.6")
Tread width 7.6"-8.8" (7.6")
Diameter 25.6"-25.8" (25.6")
