New Rear Rotors and Resurfaced Fronts
Hi Guys,
I got back from Acura of Boston today to have my brakes taken care of. As some may recall, I had a high speed shimmy when braking from highway speeds and some persistant "tugging" as I came to a stop. This built up gradually and I got used to it until the high speed shimmies got to me. I have 12K on my 2004 5AT. I do about 90% city driving but am NOT a hard braker and do not ride my brakes.
The dealer ended up giving me new rear rotors and turned the front ones on their "On car Lathe". I hear the way it works is they leave the car in gear and let the front rotors turn themselves on the lathe. Interesting! The vibrations are completely gone. I just can't believe how much smoother the braking is now. There were shimmies even at slow speeds that I thought were caused by rough roads or the tanny down shifting.
My only quibble about this is that the rotors seem a bit undersized for the weight of the car. I hear the brakes were essentially a carry over from the Gen2s. Well, the car got heavier so you would think bigger rotors were in store. I guess not. It will only be a matter of time till they warp again. I just know it. I rotated the tires myself about 5 months ago and used a torque wrench set to 80 foot/pounds. So it can't be overtightened lug nuts. Anyone else have warped rotors on their TLs? Please included your braking style also. I am curious if slowing braking towards a red light is more damaging than moderate pedal pressure. Hmmmmm.

Here's a thread I stated on the exact same issue... including all the times I had brake/rotor work done under warranty w/ my 2002 TL-S and this 2004 TL, it comes to about 6 visits, three sets of rotors, and four times "turning" the rotors:

Lots of input from other members, lots of discussion on braking style, and different alternatives for new, aftermarket rotors.
Hell, my dealer service manager even said our rotors suck, and that we'd be better off w/ aftermarket drilled/slotted rotors.

PeterUbers,
Thanks for those links. I will check them all out. I had to go with Brembo OEM replacements for my 97 Camry V6 after I warped 3 sets of brand new factory rotors! They are all made of cheap and low quality materials. My buddy has put a additional 20K on my Camry which I sold him and the Brembos are still perfect. Go figure.
