Needing advice on replacing struts and strut mounts
Hey guys, I'm new to the forum. I've been having problems with my Acura lately.
I just took it to a shop and they gave it a look-over and quoted me 5600$ for everything. I started looking at the part prices and they were like 200-300% over what I've seen online. The rack and pinion rack he quoted was 800$!
I've decided to do this on my own. I'm an engineering tech and am very mechanically inclined.
First, I want to do the front struts and strut mounts. Is there a good DIY out there that indicates the tools I need Where should I order parts?
What total time am I looking at for a job like this?
Can I do it without a lift? (just with jack stands)
Can you guys give me a little direction? Here's the quote the guy gave me.

jesus fucking christ... is the lube included in that price? that's fucking ridiculous...
You need to find a new shop to start... that's retarded.

you think charging 5600 for stuff like that, they could afford a newer printer too..

wow jesus christ. Id recommend buying all the parts on your own and if you dont have the time to do all the work then just give the parts to a shop and get charged the hourly rate. That parts markup is insane

I see the mileage is 105k. have you done the 105k service? if you havent, consider the engine mounts at same time since you are already getting access to the pssenger side easily.

Yea, UlsterBoy13, I plan to do the mounts next. I want to get the springs done so I don't ruin the new tires I'm getting :/
The prices ARE outrageous. I wrote a scathing google review on these guys and told everyone to steer clear.

You should post them here too so we know who to avoid as well

how the heck did you think you would swap the spring without removing the whole assembly
just skip the part about decompressing the spring

I'm not swapping just the springs. I'm buying coilovers... (struts with springs) this is why I'm asking for advice. Lol.
I also need new mounts. Can I purchase the whole assembly somewhere?

I've seen oem strut assemblies that include the mount. It's all put together already. All you would need to do is bolt the top and the bottom at the damping fork. Is this a good solution?

Ahh... They're called 'top hats'
You'll need spring compressor to remove those.
Same instructions

Ha, Well, apparently the "top hats" don't need a compressor (from what I read online) but those are considerably more expensive, so why not take 5 minutes, compress the spring, and save a 100 bucks.
The DIY is easy to follow, I just wasn't too sure on what I needed for my case.
I guess my line of questioning was just feeling out what I have to do to replace these things. IE, strut/spring/mount purchasing.
I'm looking to buy within the next couple of days.

If I get the MT shocks, (sport edition) will it lower my car considerably? And, how would it affect the ride? I found some MT shocks on ebay for 110$, 50$ lower than the base on a parts site.

DOES NOT LOWER the vehicle, as its the same height as the automatic trim.
in the grand scheme of things, you will not notice the difference in stiffness from AT to MT, rather you will feel a difference from worn out shocks to brand new shocks

I emailed the guy that's selling the MT Shocks for $110 on Ebay, asking him if they were new shocks. His response:
"they were previously installed on a factory car and later taken out before the vehicle left the dealership. The new owner of the car left them behind because he upgraded to A spec struts."
Does this sound right? I thought A spec and MT were basically the same. Hrmm

A-spec doesnt mean Manual Transmission. Crabman siad the Manual Transmission shocks were much different from the Automatic, not A-spec.

springs will last a long long long time. a coiled piece of steel which is wrapped in a rubber coating.
probably will last longer than you or I will be alive.
shocks have gas in them and work to dampen or lessen the vibrations from the springs, using fluid dynamics.
shocks compress and rebound eventually wearing out the components inside.
