Need tire size opinions

so i'm going with a new setup so i have more function over form and make my ride overall softer (more more sidewall). all my fenders are rolled but i want advice on 235/40 or 245/40 to make sure i don't rub/hit the fender tab

current: xxr 530s, 18x8.75 +20 on 225/40 tires (bridgestone potenza re970as)

new: tsw nurburgring, 18x9 +32 on xxx/40 tires (continental dws 06). i talked to an old member that had this exact wheel setup and it cleared his brembos

so my goal is to stay away from any rubbing while maximizing the comfort of the tires. i previously ran 235/40 nitto motivos on my xxrs and had the fender tab cut and fenders rolled but they still slashed my tires. so i went to 225/40 and had no slashing.

i know 235/40 will work but i would like to do 245/40 if possible. i really don't want the slashing or rubbing i previously had so i wanted to get your thoughts based on my situation and the tires i'm going to.

235/40 or 245/40 (based on fitment alone)?
is there much comfort difference between 235 and 245? if not, i could stay conservative with 235/40

below is a photoshop pic that our good friend thanh (gp16) put together to give me an idea of how it would look. please ignore my super super dirty car and the higher front end (i had to raise it yesterday due to some scraping and didn't have time to match the rear height before work)

I'd stick with a 235 section width if you know it won't rub, no real reason to run 245 imo. And a 235 will sit nicely on a 9" width wheel, a little stretch but not too much. DWS rubber already provides good ride comfort too from what I've read.

You're really splitting hairs here. I like that.

The things you need to concentrate on here are the tread width, and the overall diameter. The 245 will stick out exactly 1.25mm more than the 235, and be exactly 3.8mm taller on the top edge. If you get your ruler out you'll see that 3.8mm is about a ¼ of an inch. So that amount upwards, and 1.25mm outwards. Unless the 235 is flawless fitment, then I think the 245 will work, and be a more comfortable ride.

The only thing I see being an issue is that on 18's, 25.1-25.3" OD "looks" the best. The 245/40 is 25.7", so if you don't mind the looks of a little more sidewall, you should be good.

It really depends on the shadows, drop, and even the amount of tire dress you have on it. Case in point, here's my car on 255/40, which is 26" OD.

Perfect. (Explore)

In real life they looked a bit thick for my taste, whereas the 25.3" OD of my 265/35 looks damn near perfect. I'm thinking perfect would be 25.1".

thanks man, i was hoping you would have some comments! i'm an engineer so i always look at tons of details and over research everything (been researching wheels for about 3 months off and on haha)

how did you figure out that the 245 is 1.25mm more outward than the 235 on the 9" wheels? i was trying to figure that out but didn't know how. i know i gained 9mm going to this wheel setup, so i have about 4mm to play with going back outwards.

i just couldn't figure out how much the 235 and 245 would stick out from the wheel to see how much of that 9mm i gained back. do you know?

i love your beefy tires, they look so mean!

I just went to tire-rack, selected the two sizes, compared the point inch amounts to mm, and divided by 2.

I'll be selling this combo next year, going with something custom, trying to fit the big 285!

ah ok i've been looking tire rack specs but must have overlooked the difference.

oh man i want to see that 285 setup..what wheel specs will you go with on that? it's soo much easier to pick wheels when you don't have brembos but i love my brembos haha

285/30 thats gonna look fuckin awesome. man I thought id be pushing it going with 18x9.5 +45 with a 255/40 (what I want to do)

what kind of work do you anticipate needing to do to accommodate a 285?

Visual Echos - pushing the envelope

to the OP, i'm running 18x10 +25 with 245/40 squared set up. I was running a 235/40 on my 530's prior to this, my fenders are all rolled, tabs shaved, and I did some slight pulling - really depends on how low you are - i'm at 24" ground to fender lip in front, and 24.5" ground to fender lip in rear - i probably didn't even need to roll/pull in the rear - at my current height, if I go lower it will be good that i did my fronts only rub on dips in the road, but only like the sudden ones...the subtle ones aren't bad
