Narrow vs. Wide winter tire debate
#1
![Question](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/icons/icon5.gif)
So...which is better for the winter? Wider or narrower tires? I've been reading alot of conflicting arguments on the subject. I'm about to drop some cash for some winter tires and would like to know if I should go smaller/narrower or stay stock size.

Here are some choices that I'm thinking about?
215/55R16 (General Altimax Arctic Blackwall) +16X6.5 cheap rims
OR
235/45R17 (General Altimax Arctic Blackwall) + stock rims
?Is there something more "narrow" I can go with the stock rims?
Thanks

The general theory is that you want to penetrate through the snow and slush to get to the pavement, since pavement will always have much higher traction than ice or snow. So you want to use higher inflation pressures (smaller, more concentrated, footprint) and narrow - if you have a choice.

Stay with the stock size. You'll be fine. I run OEM sizes for my Winters and I've never had any issue. Most roads are plowed almost immediately anyways.
The more narrow than stock tire arguement comes from the days of bias ply tires but tire (and traction) technology has come a long way since then. I wouldn't run wider than OEM, but OEM size is fine...you won't go careening off the roads as long as you drive sensibly according to the weather conditions.
