My new 19's
I just mounted my new wheels but have issues and I need some of your expert advise. 2000 TL with H&R sport springs (1.75 f, 1.5 r). Wheels are 19x8 with a +45 offset. Tires are 235/35/19 BFG's. Streets and Nate warned me that there might be rubbing and they were right. It rides fine until i hit a dip on the freeway at 60mph and I'll hear a little rub in the back. I definitely can't put people in the back seat anymore.
I don't want to have to roll my fenders. What are my options? Do I need to switch to Comptech springs? Many of you have those. If I changed my tires to 225/35/19, would it make a difference? Do I even have an option here? Any input would really be appreciated.
Thanks

What is rubbing? The actual fender lip or the plastic tab sticking inward.
Check that plastic piece if you haven't cut it off yet! It's at the very top of the fender well connected to the rear bumper. Cut that off and see if it still rubs.
Nice set of wheels!

Thanks for the response, Socal. I haven't figured out where it's rubbing yet because I've only had them for a day. But by looking at it and by pushing my weight down onto the trunk, it seems that it rubs right where the metal part of the fender meets the plastic bumper. Nate also suggested cutting the plastic. If that will do it, I'll cut it, but I was hoping to not alter the body of the car.
Here's a close up so you can see how close it is in the rear...

Rolo,
Welcome to the forums. It's good to see another member from the Portland area. With all the TL's you see on the road you'ld think there would be more representation here. Nice rims, what kind are those.

Thanks for the positive words. The wheels are 19x8 Axis Hagens. The Hagen is a new wheel, but I've had Axis wheels on a number of cars before and they're more affordable than a lot of the wheels out there and a lot stronger too (never had a bent wheel).
I still need to hear more suggestions on my rubbing problem. I don't know if I need to change my springs, my tires or just alter my fender. Please advise...
(Ron, good to know there's some PDX representation here. You're right, very little TL aftermarket action here in the NW.)

Tire size
Changing your tire size to 225 will reduce the overall width by .4" which would be evenly distributed inboard/outboard. Find out where you are rubbing then see if reducing the width would help. Otherwise you may need to look at changing your springs IMHO. Good luck.

Yup, it rubs on the back passenger side when I hit dips at a high speed. I don't know what the hell to do about it. I don't want to alter the body by rolling/cutting fenders, but it might be my only option. I may switch to a 225/35/19 (they do make that tire) but that won't solve the problem entirely.
One of the service guys at the dealership here was telling me that lowering the car or putting bigger wheels on it alters the performance because these cars are designed to be on 16's. He's knows a lot more about TL's than I do and he's probably right, but I wasn't really trying to hear that stuff. All I want to know is what do I need to do to stop the rubbing.

those wheels are sweet
damn.. that sucks that it rubs...
cutting the fender might do the trick... it won't alter the appearance of your car in any way... just make sure that they rustproof it afterwards..
another option that i've heard about.. although not sure if it is such a great idea,
or if it will get rid of the problem in the first place
is to get coilovers and put it on the stiffest suspension setting... that way your car won't bounce at all... but the ride will probably beat you up pretty bad...

I appreciate everyone's feedback. I've research this a lot over the past week and I'm going to roll my fenders. There's a shop here in Portland that has a tool to roll them and it should clear once rolled. I didn't want to alter the body, but it looks like the best option.
ADVICE TO ANYONE BUYING AFTERMARKET RIMS: LISTEN TO THE WORDS OF THE EXPERTS ON THIS SITE! There are a lot of threads in these forums explaining tire size and offset (among other subjects), and these people know what they're talking about. They're all valuable resources, so don't go messing with your $30k car without first reading what others before you have learned. I'm grateful to all of you for your knowledge and suggestions.

Make sure when they roll your fenders that they alter only the inside edge. A TL here that has 20" rolled the fenders and now the line between the fender and the bumper doesn't match up anymore. Looks real bad.

Wanted to let you all know that I've rolled my fenders and there is now NO rubbing whatsoever. The place I went to had a tool for it and there was NO paint chipping and visibly you can't even tell they rolled it. I've been hitting bumps all afternoon to test it out and there is NO rubbing.
Thanks again to all of you for your input.

WHERE DID U GET YOUR WHEELS FROM AND HOW MUCH DID U PAY FOR THE THEM, AND IF YOUR CAR WASNT LOWERED HOW MUCH WHEELS GAP WOULD U HAVE

Rolo you took the thread thought from my mind. I just got a set of 19's DazzMatiz and I have it set up with a 48 offset. I have the Toyo Proxes 235 / 35 and the springs are at my crib ready to be installed this weekend. (YES I WILL POST PICS FOR ALL U FREAKS OUT THEIR... ) With the car on the stocks I can see the the possibility of it rubbing is their. I'm getting the Eibach pro-kit with the same drop as you.
When you have that first chance post the pic of those fenders being rolled. I was a bit hesitant of doing that but it might be my only solution as well.
Also for all you Miami Peeps if any of you know of a reliable place that can do that type of work here in the area I would appreciate it a heads up.
Thanks...

No problem. I'll take some photos & post so you can see the front wheel. I'll try to photograph the rolled fender as well for those of you who asked. I have to say though, to those who haven't seen a rolled fender, it's not as dramatic of a difference as it sounds. When I had it done & they brought my car out, I didn't even know the job was done. You can't see any difference with the naked eye. When you put your hand in there though, you feel a rounded edge instead of a straight edge & the fender now clears the wheel/tire.
BLUETYPES, if you have any other questions, let me know. I haven't been on the forums in a while & I didn't even know there were responses to my post. Sorry man.

That looks hella tight! For a guy like me who is not lowering my TL, if I was to get 19's with a 225/40/19 tire and +45 offset, would it rub on the fender?
I'm tossing up the 19's and 20's, but as much as I travel, I think the 18's would make the most sense. But, who says I can't have a "flossin bling bling" set of 19's for around town and 18's for traveling.
But your TL looks clean. Nice job!
