Moving from CO to Florida: Keep Winter Tires?

Hi All,

First off, I've used AcuraZine for the past 5 years now to solve most of my car problems (2004 TL) and this is the first time I've had to make an account to post a question...really says something about the community !

So...I live in Colorado and I'm moving to Florida for doc school (5 years, then probably back to Colorado). I have a full set of both winter tires, that I've used here, and a set of All-Season Tires for my TL. I was wondering if I can just use my winter tires in Florida (until they wear down) and then replace them with the All-Season and go on with my normal car life...As opposed to keeping them until I move back (in 5 years).

Any thoughts? Does keeping tires in storage for 5 years damage them at all? Is it worth the effort compared to just using them until they are at the end of their life? Or should I just not use them at all and take some change on craigslist before I leave CO?

Thanks!!

Sell them before you move. Buy new ones when you get back.

Get that money and harness it into something else.

Not recommended....the operating temps of the tires will be too high for winter tires. Not sure if that makes them unsafe, but they will for sure be non-optimal.

5 years of storage "may" not hurt them...but the rubber will age out and start to crack and potentially fail. Cleaned properly and stored out of high heat and sunlight, they may be fine.

Or, just sell them to me (at a good price) and drop them off in KC on your way to Florida. It is unlikely I will have my TL for more than 2 more years, so you can buy the rims back from me on your way back.
