More Rubber? 2007 Type-S

I've searched around and keep reading 100 posts looking for something specific.

I'm starting to think about upgrading my stock tires on my 07 TL Type-S.

I hate how the car looks with the stock tires, they are just too narrow.

What is a popular, wider tire size that will fit the stock rim well?

Any specific brands, models, average price paid, etc are also encouranged.

Thanks

try 245/40 which is a taller sidewall or 255/40 whcih is wider and skinnier sidewall. I would go with 245/40 it provides more cushioning.

255/40 on the stock rims. They look awesome and anyone who says anything about them being too wide for a stock rim is full of it. I've been talking to a lot of the road race guys lately looking for every last trick for my upcoming trip to Willow and some of the guys in stock classes are running 265s on 6" rims.

So far, for absolute performance, the Nitto NT05 is just a step below a full R compound race tire. Road noise is supposedly acceptable, treadwear is ok, about what you would expect from a tire like this, and track times seem to be on par with the best street tires out there.

This is great. When I need new tires, I definitely want a wider tire than the stock ones. Plus, I want a tire with a sidewall that makes it look like I have a drop without actually doing a drop.

Get 245/45-17 Yokohama W4s. Widest tread available at 9.2", even wider than the much shorter all season 255/40-17. Will also mention once again the 255/40-17 too wide for the 8" rims per the rack.

^I agree about the Yoko W4S...great tire. Totally disagree about a 255/40 not fitting on an 8" wheel....it will with no issue. A 265 on a 6" wheel? Not sure that I would...

Here's my TL-S with 245/40/18 W4S....dimensionally wider than just about any other tire out there in the same size.

Screw what tire rack thinks, that's lawyer talk. I've looked at example after example of guys running much wider tires on narrower rims and doing so under race conditions then driving home and using them as a daily driver. I've put over 30,000 miles on the 255/40 combo on stock rims without a single problem. If they offered the NT05 in a 265 I would go with that, unfortunately it's only offered in a 255.

People on acurazine say one thing, the guys who autocross and roadrace say another. Which one would I go with??

Current G-force Sports (suck)

Old G-force KDW-2s

You can see there are no problems with footprint. The entire treadwidth touches the ground. So for those of you that talk about rounding of the shoulders, here's your proof it doesn't exist.

I'm getting away from the BFG line altogether. According to my experience and nearly every review posted on these tires they start out fairly quiet and after 5,000 miles you can't carry on a conversation. I don't know if the TL is too heavy for the Sports but my experience seem to go along with my BMW owner's experiences that you can take rubber off in thick layers when pushing them hard. All in all, even the top of the line BFGs suck.

The new Nittos seem very promising.

I never said the tire wouldn't fit. If you want to install almost any width tire on an 8" wheel, you could get it to "fit", wide or narrow eg strectched tires. Been around a long time and some reasonable fitment applications are necessary or you'd have the unknowledgeable people installing ridiculous sizes on a undersized/oversized wheel as you are stating. Why do you think tire manufacture’s recommend specific wheel width for their tires? Maybe for the best performance and longevity. FYI-Tire Rack receives the wheel width information from the manufacturer; they don't make up the specs.

I guess you could say screw the speed rating too and run an S rated tire 150MPH, or would you stand by that spec? Or how about summer tires in the winter with rubber compound that's not to bexposed to freezing temps, I guess you would say screw it, they can be used in the winter! Actually you could because nothing is stopping you, same as installing a non-recommended size on a specific wheel width.

One is much better off obtaining the widest tread width available in the recommended size range for the wheel width!

Enough said.

Guys, what is your suggestion for tire size on OEM rims. But I want to make it look like I've got a drop without actually doing one.

^ With OEM 17s, I'd definitely go with 255/40s. Not sure if you'd want a taller profile, may look too "truckish". How about a mild drop a la A-Specs?

The 255/40 will lower the entire car slightly but give you more of a fender gap. The 245/45 will raise the car slightly but take away some of the gap making the car look like it has a drop.

Thanks guys! I'm still not sure if I want to do a drop Ramrod. I just didn't want to mess with all that, but now I'm starting to think about it. But thanks for the advice about the 255/40s. I definitely want to go wider too-to fill out the wheel well.

I hate cars-thanks for the overview. I was hoping there was a simple answer, but it looks like I'll need to make a choice, huh?

It seems like nothing is simple lol. Really, there's barely a difference in fender gap in those two sizes. You're going to be the only one that will be able to notice especially at stock height.

Right now mine is so on the edge of looking too low for my tastes that I'm afraid to try the 265/40s that I've been thinking about. That 1/4" may make a difference once the car is lowered. At 32, the last thing I want is to look like I'm trying to be a teenager with a slammed car but I tend to be very conservartive so take it with a grain of salt.

Here's the pics of mine on the right with a-spec, Konis, and 255/40s. The driver's side looks unusually high, it might be the ground it's sitting on or maybe it's just that high.

With the A-Spec springs, it should just be a straight swap. None of that other crap associated with a more extreme drop.

On stock 17's, 255/40 is the way to go if you're dropped or if you don't mind increasing the wheel well gap by ~1/8th inch.

245/45 works and takes away about an 1/8th of an inch in gap. Sidewall is a little tall, but it looks pretty good once you get used to it.

Bearcat, how about 255/45/17's? That would widen the tire to fill up the wheel well and DEcrease the gap as well.

Will this work??? I'd really like to accomplish widening my tires AND look like I have a drop.

265/35/18 = love

Looks hot. I couldn't be happier

Edit:

my reading today sucks... Failed to see you wanted to keep the stock rim.... The tire size I listed was for the 04 gunmetal A-spec rims...

So far it looks like the NT05 is a real winner. I finally pulled the trigger and ordered a set. They literally bridge the gap between a full race tire and an ultra high performance summer tire. And they're cheap, $142 per tire yet outperform every tire out there in dry traction. Tires are the most important thing you can do to a car. I would place a lot of weight on what you choose. All the suspension mods in the world won't make up for a crappy set of tires.

That's like 2 days a year here lol. The reports so far are they're pretty good in the rain...for what they are.

I've been caught in a few downpours with bald drag radials and even the Quick Time Pros on with a car that I could barely get moving from a redlight before the light turned red again. The rear of the car would slide at 35mph just from the slant to the road. These should be a nice improvement from my GN in the rain.
