Michellen Pilot , Sparkling Silver and 4ppsi?

I just got michellen pilot Sport AS and 18" Sparkling Silver rims from Acura Dealer. Mechanic pumped my tires to 40PSI. He stated that it will help protect my rims from dips and potholes?? Is this right. 40psi seems like it might be too high?

The recommended PSI for the A-Spec wheels should be on a sticker on your wheels or wheel boxes, but I think it's 39F/36R (may also in the back of the owner's manual). 40 PSI isn't very much higher, but 40 PSI is max I would go for street driving. Lower rear pressure = less understeer and plow. Higher pressure stiffens up the sidewalls so there is less compression should you hit a pothole or edge, but too high is not good either.
