Lowering Springs Vs Coilovers.

I am going to lower my TL soon, and i been talking to some of my friends that are big car nuts. One tells me to just get springs and the other says get coilovers. The one that tells me to get coilovers says that i could have problems the stock struts down the road. Have you all heard of any bad stories about just going with Springs. i dont want to spend 1200 bucks on lowering my car. I dont track race or anything like that.

There have been many members who lower their TL with just sport springs on the OEM shocks, and have driven many a thousand miles before needing new shocks. The aftermarket springs will cause your OEM shocks to prematurely wear faster, but there are factors that play into the premature failure (miles on original shocks for example). A lot of people have had very good things to say about coilovers as well, it just depends on what you want to do. If you have time, try searching for the many threads by "I Hate Cars" under the suspension section of Azine, and you will find a lot of info on drops, and sway bars.

+1 on what slpr said. I bought Tein Stechs.. my rear shocks blew a few thousand miles later (I was at 90k when I put them on), fronts still haven't blown. Long story short, I wish I would've saved up more and bought coilovers from the beginning

I wish that I had gotten coils just because if I get rims it's easier to move the car up and down so you can get that perfect stance.

coilovers FTW! they are great for adjustability and dampning if you get adjustable ones on that end... i lowered my car on coilovers you can find good deals on them new and sometimes in the black market and like mentioned above you can raise or lower to your preference!

OP...if you're just lowering 1" or so, and your OEM shocks are in good shape, then you'll be fine. A mild drop *may* accelerate shock wear slightly, but you'll most likely get almost as much mileage on the OEM shocks with a slight drop. Anything lower than 1 1/2" or so, then I would look at a fully adjustable coilover set-up. But unless you're constantly adjusting ride height, I don't see the point. Adjustable shocks (i.e. Koni Sports) are nice to have as you can play with damping settings according to road/climate conditions...they really do make a difference.

If you're going to install drop springs with shocks that have 90K miles on them...they were probably on their way out to begin with...

i have s-techs on the factory shocks and my ride is still pretty good, except for big holes or bumps that i might not see, but the factory ride on the tl is not caddy anyway, its got some sport in it
