Lowering - shocks? or no?

Lowering - shocks? or no?
I know this has been addressed in one form or another in other threads, but as far as my search skills go, there has not been a thread about this alone.
I want to lower my totally stock 04 5AT TL. I am considering the Comptech springs, but have been told by friends that I would have to get new shocks for my ~3500 lbs car.
So...are shocks absolutely necessary with the Comptech springs? I know some have installed without them and talk about getting new shocks when the stock ones wear out. How long will that be? estimates?
I haven't done my taxes, yet, but I am expecting ~$600. I was hoping to get the springs and sway bar, but if I must get shocks, I'll go with the A-spec.

It's not necessary but it is recommended. IMO, the stock shocks are not dampened enough for the stock springs. Getting Comptech or any other brand of aftermarket spring will make the ride worse since these springs have a higher spring rate. The stock shocks will be overwhelmed, causing a worse ride and premature wear.
