Looking for tires that will last

Hi,
Like everyone else in this forum, I need some new tires on my 04 TL. My original tires are so bald I can barely make it down the street in the rain (20K on the tires). I have been doing some research and may get the Pirelli M & S tires. I live in FL, what do you guys recommend? Should I get these tires or something else?

Thanks for your time!!

Look for a 300-360 treadwear rating.

I love the Falken Ziex 512 tires. Lots of info if you search.

When my BS EL-42s wear out, I will likely replace them with Pirelli PZero Nero M&S which have a treadwear index of 400. I only have 10,000 miles on my tires now and they are down to 7/32" tread depth.

What is the tread depth (a numerical figure) you should replace a tire? I have 10k miles on my Eagle LS Goodyear's, and they're at 8/32"

You don't need a mud and snow tire in Florida. Go with a nice TOYO Proxes 4. You can get them for about 140 a tire mounted and balanced and they are great in the popup storms that happen in Florida. They will also give you a longer life than the EL-42's. I have them and they are incredible.

You might want to check out the Nitto NEO GEN tires. These are one of the stickyest tires and provide great wet wheather handling as well. Another great attribute about these tires is that they have the longest wear life even with negative camber from lowering the car.

2/32" minimum. From there and less is dangerous.

Yes, 400 is considered pretty good. You should use tread index only to compare tread life within a brand, not between brands.

On my last two sets of tires it has been 10/32". But it may vary on different brands and type of tire.

Anyone know anything about Dayton Fusion tires? I have been pricing the Pirelli Nero's and found that they may be a little too expensive for W speed rated tires that are only supposed to last about 25K. If I am going to spend $1000 to get tires, I would like them to last at least 35K. Has anyone had the Pirelli's for at least 20K can tell me how the tread is???

Thanks a bunch!!

I have about 16K on my Pirelli's and they are at 7/32". I think I paid about $700 or so for mine (245/40/18) - mounted, balanced, installed with road hazard warranty. Stock size should be less.

Dayton is a value brand in the Bridgestone/Firestone family. If the parent company isn't willing to stamp their name on the side of the tire, it's a safe bet that there may be some compromises that you may or may not be willing to live with.

M&S is just a typical rating for an all-season tire. The Proxes 4 is also M&S rated. I've met a lot of people who have been very happy with Toyo tires.

The falkens are one of the cheapest next to the korean brands yet it offers 30,000 miles guaranteed and the handling seems to be quite good. I got them two days ago and i'm very happy with them so far.

$85 each at edgeracing.com i believe. But that's w/o the shipping charge.
I got 3 of them at American Tire Depot here in socal for $348 (including install and free rotations/free tire repair)

Brett I have around 17,500 on my tires and looking to get rid of the EL's by 20,000...from the silent research I have been doing on the forum and the tire sites, I think I am going to go with the Falken Ziex 512's, heard good things about it and for $85 a pop they are a steal, you can go through 2 sets of Falkens for the same price you would pay for one set of some of the other brands.

Also consumer reports reported them as one of the best tires on the market. Do a search someone has posted the article or information from CR.

Let us know what you get and what you think.

I have the Fuzion HRi's (all season, about 1K miles). So far, they're fine. Very quiet compared to the worn out EL42s, handle very well in the rain. Some other people on this board have the ZRi's and like them as well. Both tires are getting good review on Tirerack.com. I got all 4 HRi's with road hazard for $498 OTD at Firestone, which includes a 30-day test drive. There's a few threads here that discuss Fuzion tires. Do a search for Fuzion.
