Lifespan of base model TL shocks ?

What is the ballpark number for a car that sees a lot of rough roads (potholes) in the NYC area ?

Also, is it worthwhile to change the 2006 shocks to 2007/2008 shocks ? I have been seeing shocks and springs for sale in black market at decent prices.

The '07-'08 shocks are softer.

I noticed my factory front shocks getting softer after about 40,000 miles. I could've run them longer but it was a great excuse to get the Konis.

He's probably right. I read in 07 they softened the base TL's suspension because they now offered the Type S model. I replaced my shocks on my 06 TL with the factory ones at a little over 50K miles because the handling was getting sloppy with more play in the steering and body roll. I live in the tri-state area like you and shocks really get beat up here fast.

Tokico, kyb, and koni make shocks for the TL. If your not planning to lower it I'd put the OE's on. These guys gave me a good deal on them www.acuraofpeoria.com

Thanks, I have a little over 40,000 miles on my TL. It drives fine but I feel it's starting to wear out...this past winter was bad, so many potholes..

Do your recall what the labor rate was to replace all 4 shocks ?

Thanks. Is it a noticeable improvement in handling to add a Progress rear sway bar to the OE suspension ?

I see you have a lot of knowledge with cars...you squeezed 600hp+ from your Grand National, this car was rated 200hp out of the factory. I wanted to buy one back then until my insurance co. gave me a $6,000 quote back in 1985/1986.

It was a little underrated lol. But 245hp and 355tq were the stock numbers for '86 and '87. It's still running mostly stock parts. Just a lot of dremel work and tuning.

It is a noticable difference to add the Progress rear sway bar. However, read some of my threads on which model TL you have. It makes a difference if you have the base auto, base manual, or Type S, because each one has a different size front swaybar which will affect the handling balance.

I went to this local tire place and the guy replaced them for me for $300.00. The labor rate was $75.00 hr and it took about 4 hours. I had it alligned afterwoods, which I recommend. Make sure you get someone who gives a s*** to install them.

That's good to hear. I was a little late sending them out and I usually clean up the parts really good before sending them but those came straight off the car and into the boxes so I felt bad about the dirtiness.

80K miles in NYC. God bless you. I guess it's a individual thing. All I know at about 50-55K miles my cars handling seem to decline (OE suspension). I couldn't figure out why, then I thought of the shocks. Some one told me if I put new shocks on, I won't notice the difference. Well he was wrong, I did. I also read that peak performance declines at about 50K miles. The shocks will last longer then that, but will show degradation in their performance. Most people don't notice it or care if it does. But not me.

I have 130k miles on my '05 TL (90% HW miles, as you can imagine) and I asked my dealership service department about new shocks when they put my new rubber on... he says to me "I hardly ever replace shocks on TL's - did you hit something to damage them?" I said "no" and he said "I'd just leave them alone, then."

That surprised me. I'm not sophisticated enough to know how bad my ride is with stock shocks 130k miles old, but when a guy that makes money by having me replace stuff tells me to leave them alone, I'm not inclined to argue!

But it doesn't feel right to me.

And it ain't just the insurance.

The only thing a Buick Grand National can't pass on the road is a gas station!
