Initial Impressions of Koni Yellows with H&R Sports

Just got my Koni Yellows installed with H&R sports. Initial impression is that the suspension is much tighter, but even on full soft the ride is a little rough. I went bottom perch all round since I've got a 6MT and it gave it a nice drop. I'll have to measure later to compare the actual drop, but it's probably around 1.5-1.8". Will wash the car and take pics this weekend after the rain passes.
Oh, and the rear has some visible camber, so I'll probably have to buy a camber kit and get an alignment very soon. Hopefully the springs will settle a little more and I'll be right at 1.8-2" lower than stock.

Did you had aspec spring on your 6mt? If so how do they compare?

Can you give more detail in reference to the ride and it being rough?

No, just stock springs.

My car has almost 130k on it and I was still on the original shocks and springs. Ever since I put 18" aspec wheels on, and a little before that, the ride quality has been rough. Any time I go over a bump, hit a small pothole, etc. it seems to give the car a good jolt. With other cars I've driven recently, the shocks and car seem to absorb more of the bumps so that you don't feel it. Even after installing these shocks and springs, with the shocks being on full soft, I still feel like I'm given a jolt when driving over bumps. The car doesn't seem to absorb a lot of the shock. Maybe this is partly due to the fact that I have 18" wheels and tires, maybe it's because I have a lower sidewall of 40, who knows. If there are any other suggestions that may improve my ride quality I'm all ears.

I was thinking about going with the same setup, I have 163K on oem shocks and having some cupping and strange tire wear. So I believe its a shocks issue, you have any pictures of your car with the current setup? I want to see how low the drop is, as i'm concern about scraping.

Based on what I bolded above, did you do anything before installing the wheels? Or are you saying at 130k your suspension was already feeling rough and moreso with the wheel install? Seems like it is a problem pre wheel install. You are the first I have heard to have an issue like this with this setup so I am curious if it is related.

I am not sure how to read a dyno like this, but looking at the koni yellow website page here, it looks like they are valved fairly well to cover a broad spectrum including close to stock. But again, I might be misreading the dyno.

Your drop looks nice and is the same as mine on the Tein S-tech and stock shocks.

Have you thought about raising the springs in the shock perch? From what I understand, you get less suspension travel with the springs on the lowest perch which will cause you to have a rougher ride.

No. I wanted to lower the car and try to improve the ride quality as well. The handling has improved and IMO the car looks better with a drop, but the ride quality isn't that great. I still think it may be due to the smaller sidewall and 18" wheels, but I'm not certain. How do people slam their car with a 3" drop and still attain stock height ride quality?

No, I've had the wheels on for about 6k miles and the suspension wasn't feeling that smooth. Maybe I'm not describing it well. After I installed the wheels, and possibly before that, it feels/felt like the car gets a jolt, or hits the bump hard. When I drive a BMW, or even an older Accord, the car tends to absorb more of the shock in the wheels/tires/suspension area. In my TL, it feels like my butt comes off the seat when I go over a bump.

Could this be related to the axles? Ball joints? It's the first time I've had 18" wheels on any car that I've owned, so I didn't know what to expect.

Did you trim the bump stops and tighten the bolts under load? I happen to have just installed the same set up over the weekend and prefer the ride quality I'm getting now.

Are you supposed to cut the bump stops when going H&R sports? I thought it said not to when I installed mine.

I don't think a 3" drop would retain stock height ride quality. To me, it's all a matter of opinion. Some people have a higher tolerance for firmer/rougher riding suspension while others don't. I didn't catch the part of your post about your ride suffering after installing the 18" A-specs.

Do you have the stock Wheels/Tires to put back on to compare against?

Yes, I might just put them on to see how the car feels. I actually like how some cars look with the stock wheels and a good drop.
