Question How much torque is too much ??

Hello all,

I just got my tires rotated and balanced. I was wondering if too much torque is too much?.. in the manual it says I think 8x something. The garage I took it to did 100LBS.. IS that ok?

Thanks

I think the specified maximum torque for our TL is 80-85 lbs. Yes, going over could lead to problems like warped brake rotors. Sometimes the techs will use torque sticks which are limiting the torque. They are different colors so make sure the correct ones are used. Rarely are torque wrenches used nowadays. Go back and have it fixed NOW. Good luck!

But a torque wrench and rotate your own tires. It's not hard, it saves a good bit of money, and you know it's done right.

Since I have separate rims for snow tires I don't ever let the tire guys ever mount a rim to the car. If I need tires I drop off the rims (that aren't on the car) and then pick them up later once the new tires are on.

One set of warped rotors, stripped lugs, or lugs you can't get off when you flat is all the lesson you will need.

Let me add that the cheap "beam" type of torque wrench will do for the tires. Very inexpensive solution, but good insurance.
