Help quick! 205/50/17 Winter tires??

Guys, I need to buy Winter tires today and I found Hankook W409's for $560 installed. Now I was talking to the owner of the shop and he told me that I should go from a 235/45 to 205/50 on the stock rim and said it won't be a problem at all.

Is this alright or is this guy misinformed? He is the owner of the place and the shop is pretty reputable in my area.

Thanks,

Chris

That ratio seems to be close enough. However, I'd be more worried about stretching 205 on an 8" rim.

I run 225 btw.

That's what I'm worried about, whether it will fit on the width of the rim. Seems a little narrow for the rim.

it would probably be fine, however your rim will be more exposed to curbing. not a big deal if you know how to drive.

i recently mounted 225's on 9.5" porsche wheels for winter driving. i think he's put about 500 miles on them so far, and no death yet.

According to the Tirerack website, the recommended rim width for 205/50/17 is 5.5-7.5 max. IMO the install would be unsafe, and may be prone to air loss, as the seal between tire/wheel might be compromised.
