HELP! Casualty on the 18" OEM Wheels

It was bound to happen, the drawback to the 18" OEM setup is the wheel that protrudes slightly...(setup is 18" OEM wheels with Yokohoma)...anyways, scraped a curb, ouch!!! Any advice on what I can do or is this a character builder for the TL.

Get some touch up paint that matches the color, prep the section, and try to cover the abrasion. It wont look perfect, but it will certainly be less noticeable than the curb rash.

I remember a thread that said the silver color for the MDX was a good match. I don't remember if it was good for 18" wheels, but you could check it out.

Here's a great DIY thread on how to repair. You'll have to experiment with the paint color, but this will fix it as best as possible:

Lore found that touch up paint for the Desert Silver Metallic RSX - YR-534M - was a good match.

It's a good match -- but not a perfect match -- and should conceal small rashes well enough that the color difference is insignificant. However, with that much rash, I don't know how well the touch up paint will do, but it's definitely worth a shot.

My area around the lug nuts are all scratched up too from the tech being STUPID and INCONSIDERATE when they were loosening them up with the airgun.

curb rash color on stock 17" wheels

What color touch up is the best for the 17" stock rims?

Alas...your Team Anthracite spokescar is in a foul mood today!

I like the Audiworld fix, but I am very scared about sanding down clearcoat. It just seems wierd to me, but then again, there is already damage there, not much you can do there...

well, I'll get some of that Desert Mist touch up for RSX, now is that the color the most closely matches gunmetal grey on the 18" rims..just making sure I dont' do this half ass.

BTW, thanks for all the advice. Maybe it won't be such a bad thing.

Just rereading the Audiworld DYI...does that mean the paint has to be spraypaint variety...

i.e., using touch up paint wont work...I've never done auto painting before. Before the clearcoat application, what kind of paint to use...which then goes back to the original comment...if not touch up, then what color paint would match gunmetal. Hmmmm....

Properly applied, spray paint will give a very even, smooth finish. I would think that touchup paint will show brush strokes.

Another option would be to use an air brush. You can get the paint from any decent body shop, and it would match perfectly. You'll have to buy a quart, and it will most likely be about $25. If you don't have one, you can rent an air compressor at Home Depot (I think) or just buy one of the small tankless varieties at Sears. You can buy the brush kit at Home Depot or Lowes for about $50. I know it's some bucks up front, but you'll probably do this again, and then you'll have the stuff.

BTW - Take the wheel off the car - it minimizes masking and mess!!!

I know I'm trying to bring an old thread back to life, but I need to know about the 18" wheel touchup color.

Is the Desert Silver for the RSX still the best choice, or has anyone found somehting better? Is TL Anthracite color better?

Thanks in advance.

Yeah, just get some similar matching spraypaing, file the scratches down to a somewhat smooth surface and mask off the whole thing, just exposing the scratched part. Even tho it won't match perfect, people will have to look for the difference in color, which is alot better than what you have there. Just isolate the scratch as much as possible so the spray paint doesn't get on the undamaged paint.

Off topic, Do you have any good images of your car on the wheels?

The article only mentions WURTH wheel paint and clear . Has anyone answered the question of specifically what paint color/manufacturer to use on the 17" stock TL rims?

The Wurth color matches the 17" stock from everyone I've talked to.

I was needing help with the 18" gunmetal color. I went to Park Acura and the parts mgr. helped a bunch by putting a bunch of samples on cards. It definitely looks like Desert Silver is the closest. However, I also got a bottle of Kaiser Silver Metallic. I'm thinking of mixing a 4:1 or 5:1 ratio of the Desert to Kaiser will get the right color.

When you say the worth color, which wurth color do you mean? Is it just the plain silver?

I think I answered my own question by checking some sites on the web but now found another one. WURTH seems to make an older style looking can that is black in color called LACQUER METALIC SILVER and a newer style can with a red color to it called LACQUER SILVER. Are these both the same products and they simply removed the name metalic?

Research info for everyone

OK...I did some research to hopefully help everyone out. This applies to the 17" OEM wheels for the 2004 TL Automatic.

I called WURTH USA after noticing they made a Metalic Silver paint and a Silver paint. The NO LONGER manufacture the Metalic Silver. This is important because that's the one shown in the link within this thread.

So I went out and purchased some of my own and am going to try it out. It looks close but not exact. I am hoping everyone can post their product experiences by listing the MANUFACTURER, NAME and COLOR of the paint. Without this detail it's hard to help. Here's what I am trying:

Manufacturer - Dupli-Color
Name - High Performance Wheel Coating
Color - Silver and Clear(for clear coat)
