got some aftermarket wheels and now this..

got some aftermarkets and now this...
got some 20x7.5 wheels Offset 40
225-35-20 nankang ns2 tires all around
purchased used but tires are 90% life tread.

I put on all 4 wheels myself with hub-centric rings but now that i go for a drive there much much much more "road noise" and somewhat grinding noise. The "road noise" becomes doubled in volume when i brake, and somewhat a little more when i turn to the right. What could this be?

Tire pressure all around is 41 (max is 51psi)

Oh I can't wait to read what some people are gonna come up with to explain this. From personal experience, sounds like standard operating procedure for 20's....

I'm sorry...but I just can't see the benefit of putting 20" rims on a TL or most any other sedan unless it's just going to stay parked and be looked at...lol. I think 19's are pushing it for "real world" driving nevermind 20's. By "real world" I mean the condition of roads and highways....they aren't many places in the country where they are pristine.

I'm personally not into the wagon wheel look (tall fron side and skinny from rear) but I bet the porblem is you have virtually no tire. I would be afraid to take a corner since you may scrape an outer rim. The stiffness of the tiny sidewall will surely punish your suspension components. Good Luck!

the SRT-8 300C comes with 20's stock. I see plenty of those around my area.

Shouldn't you have gone with 30 wall on 20" rims instead of 35. I beleive that's the spec. Using that tire brings you to 3.36% diameter difference over the stock. I think your problem is getting the wrong tires.

It's probably just because you are in 20's , you did get the right tires for the size of the rim. The price you pay for looks man. Post pics 20's is the best size for the TL.

I thought the minimum witdh for the 3G TL is 8.0
I wouldnt recommend putting anything less the 8inches considering the factory ones are 8 inches wide. Maybe is that. I know they always not to go any lower the OEM specifications. Higher yes but not lower

It sounds like your tires are rubbing.

You have ruined the handling and ride of your car in the name of looking like a pimp. Next time, resist the bling.

I have to agree with some of the above posts. Double check your aspect ratio and the optimum compatibility that you are able to run with. Also I've never heard anything remotely good about Nankang tires. I currently have 19's on my car and have since gone through two sets of tires (Bridgestones Potenza RE050A and Michelin PS2). There's a significant difference in ride quality between the two. It's night and day! It may be my own subjective opinion, but I swear that the roads were like hell when I had the Bridgestones on. Shortly after I replaced the Bridgestones with Michelin's and most of the uncomfort disappeared. Perhaps the solution for you would be to invest in a new set of quality tires.

Also, keep in mind that you are running on 20's. If your logically about it, then you should be aware of the sacrifice in ride quality when opting for larger wheels (especially when they're not wrapped in quality tires). Alot of folks on this forum have 20's and I haven't read many complaints from them (besides some rubbing issues).

Just keep that in mind that you can't really expect the ride quality to remain idle when you jump significantly in wheel size. Even with my 19's, I think the ride is on the rough side; Everything from performance and handling to comfort was mitigated or declined when going with 19's. In fact, I don't like it and I'm contemplating on switching back to the ASPEC wheels. So I couldn't even imagine how harsher it may be with 20's.

Good luck to you. If your set on running on your 20's, try getting some really quality tires.

I had 19's put on about a month ago and can't tell the difference when riding over any of the bumps at all. I do avoid big potholes at all cost though. The only difference that I did have at first was the new tires sliding when hitting a corner a little hard when new but now that they are broken in they are perfectly fine.

No difference, really? I'm jealous! Do you get any rubbing on your 19's? I'm rubbing slightly on the rears. My current setup is stagger though (9.5" in the rear with 37et). Overall, I think its noticeably harsher, but tolerable. The car doesn't jump out as fast from idle and its not as agile as with the Aspec. Perhaps I need to break in the tires (the Michelin PS2 have under 200 miles on them, whereas the Bridgestones that I took off had under 3k miles). I'm still debating if I should swap out the 19's and buy some 18-inch wheels, but I'll wait to break in the new tires first.

the factory wheel is 17x7.5 i think.

Tire sizes recommended for 20 on TL is 235-30-20.

I got this set from a gen 2 TL. I checked with tire shops and they said its ok to run it just might look a little funky.

Handling is still great.

I bought 2 new Kuhmos that I put in the front, and put the 2 Nankangs in the back and problem solved!
thanks guys

Whoever is talking 'ish about 20's being a bad idea for a 04-06 TL please refrain. I just put a set of 20x8.5 wheels with Pirelli Pzero Neros size 245/30/20 and there is no rubbin', less than a 1/2 raise which isn't even noticeable with the underbody spoiler kit all around, and the ride is smoother and quieter imho.

If i ever had 20's on my TL, they would be cracked and totaled out within 2 weeks
I had Racing Hart 19's with a 35 aspect ratio on my old CL and they only lasted 3.5 weeks and two of them ended up with cracks.
Rhode Island roads are terrible, along with Mass.
I will NEVER go below a 40 sidewall again, my 18's are just fine.

I think I am going to go with a 20X7.5 with a 235-30-20. I have a 20x8.5 with 245-30-20 with no problems but I am ready for a new style and the rims I want only come is this size I think it will work since the tire width si the same as thge originals let me know if I am wrong thanks.
