Good idea? Nitto NT05

Or bad idea? Let me know.

So I have a set of 235/45-17 BFG G-Force SS. Love these tires. They're at 7/32 all around when I checked last week.

I've been thinking about getting a pair of 255/40-17 Nitto NT05 and putting them in the front. Leaving the pair of BFG at home for when the rear tires wear out.

^ recommended but not a requirement. I don't really get why the OP is doing it though? Why not just keep rotating the BFG's until all four are ready to be replaced and then get the NT05s? 7/32's is still like 60-70% tread on most tires. More info would be nice.

I run Nitto Invo's up front and GoodYear Eagle GT in the rear. OP why don't you just keep running them til they are worn?

I've extensively tested nearly every ultra performance and R compound tire on the market. IMO, nothing touches the NT05 in all around performance.

NT05 comes with 6/32" though.

Putting the NT05 only on the front would result in oversteer at the limit as the BFGs would lose traction at levels the NT05 would laugh at. I've run those exact BFGs in a 255/40/17 and they aren't in the same class. The NT05 rides better as well. Even compared to their flagship model the KDW, the NT05 kills them in every category with braking being somewhat close.

Also, a difference. In diameter will affect traction control, stability control, and possibly ABS.

If you search around and do a lot of talking, you can get them out the door, mounted and balanced for $550 for a set of 4. Full retail is something like $800 for just the tires.

I see you're in Socal, if you still want them when I get another set, we can probably get wholesale price for a set of 8 if you can make the drive to Bakersfield.

Not bad. I have access to a tire machine and balancer so I can save some money there. So if the price is good then I may try a set.

It requires me going in with my law enforcement friends to get the discounts, that's the reason I say maybe. It's for sure but it can take a while. Don't know if it would be worth it with shipping but I'm more than willing to help if it's cheaper for you.

For your area, the NT05 would be a strictly summer tire. It loses traction in the cold. Around here it rarely gets below freezing and at freezing it acts like an average good tire. Traction in the wet is very good. Once it warms up, it's amazing. I wouldn't think of trying it in the snow or extreme cold though.

On a side note, I really like your Christmas spirit, it's nice to have that around here.

Thanks for the offer, I'll check out local places for pricing. I recently purchased a set of pilot super sports and love their performance. Ive been debating about giving the NT05s a try from everyone praising them.

Thankyou. I am 50 years old and owned about 20 new cars and trucks, I have been ordering tire from Tirerack since they started the business, so I UNDERSTAND all about tire compounds, etc.

My OEM all seasons will be for winter IF it comes here anymore. My other set WILL be extreme summer, or max summer tires in a 19" size, probably 245mm.

I will check them out.. I am highly considering Conti ExtremeContact DW Max per tires this time. I have had Bridgestones best, Michelin, Yoko, Pirelli, Good year, BF Goodrich, Dunlops, all max perm summer.

Thanks

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

The NT05 is different (better) than all of those but the Dunlop Star Specs. Nothing else will come close to these two in dry traction. The reason I chose the NT05 over the Star Specs is they're much quieter and if you're lapping the car, the Nittos don't turn to butter after they get hot. The turn-in response is also a little better. If you want the absolute best in dry traction, these two are the only choice. The BFG KDW-2 is also a good performer, they were somewhat close to the Nittos in braking but not that close in cornering. They're also so loud that you can't have a conversation with passengers, it sounds like you have mud tires on the car.

Is there a tire that will last a little longer? Say 25-30,000 miles? Something that is similar to the NT05.

I'm still down with the NT05 but I was just wondering.

Unfortunately that's one of the compromises you have to make for this kind of performance. Tread life closely follows traction.

The Star Specs come with more tread than the NT05 so that might be worth looking into. Similar performance on the street but with more noise.

I make sure my alignments are perfect and when I rotate tires I have them taken off the rim and flipped around. I can get a good 15,000-19,000 miles out of them, sometimes more depending on if they see track duty or not. The Star Specs should get you into the 20,000 mile range.

I looked at this tire and OH MY, I dont think it would do good in heavy rain. A dry track tire IMO.

They're excellent on wet roads, better than anything else I've experienced. During light rain and shallow water they're fine. I wouldn't want to push them through deep water at high speeds. They channel water away ok but will hydroplane in the deeper stuff.

Loved my NT-05s...they were excellent on the track...if they weren't so darn expensive I'd definitely get them again...if I could get them for $120 like IHC says I'd def snag another set.

As it is, looks like Hankook RS-3s for me...$580 OTD on tirerack...for 255/40/17...

Seriously!! My Hankook V12s were 4 for $380 with all the discounts and rebates at thanksgiving...now they are like $140 or more each!!! More expensive than the RS-3s...

Neat, I just looked up the date i bought these. March 23.
I probably installed them the first or 2nd week of april.

I didnt not record mileage.....shaking my damn head......
butt, my tires still have traction.
I've probably driven about 8-10k miles on them
I rotate them about every 2 to 3k miles. Not as extensive as IHC, but i do move the fronts to the rear, and vice versa.

I'll take pics of my bald ass tires!!! lol
it is a funny sight to see, bald tires but still grip very well!

That sucks about the mileage. Right now I drive the car only 3-4 miles a day so I can get a couple years out of them. On the first set I was commuting 90 miles a day.

Traction will actually increase as they go bald. In my area where I know I'm not going to get caught by an unexpected shower, I'll run them bald and replce before the winter rains arrive. I wouldn't try that in a rainy area though.

^well thats another reason why i wanted to take pics of them....
I wanted to show you to see if they are wearing correctly.
I dont daily drive.

so 10k in a year is all from spirited driving :racecar:
I did drop the car recently with aspec springs, but have not taken it to get it aligned.

no uneven wear...but thats probably because I dont daily drive.
I'm not sure if I want to be buying tires every year and a half.
might move on to the hankoooooooks or the star specs!

But I do thank you for letting me know about these tires.
As this is my first car, I'm modding...I'm going to experiment with different setups.

Star specs are good but heavy as fawk! RS-3 or NT-05 all the way...or if you're really gangsta, NT-01...

That's one thing that's keeping me away from the Nittos. I commute 75 miles a day and do 20k a year. That would mean a set of tires every year if everything goes perfect. I think these BFGs are wearing that fast.

I still want to try them but It'll get expensive if I stick with them.
