Eagle F1 All Season vs AVID W4S
Eagle F1 All Season vs AVID W4S
Guys
I am in a serious need for new tires....I have been reading and reading and reading. It seems these are the two tires that are favorable (the Potenza RE960s also seem good but too pricey).
What do you guys suggest (BTW I Live in New York)
Thanks

Go for the 245/45-17 W4s. The tread is about .8" wider than the GY and the price is right. I have the S.4 245 great tire. If you need it for snow usage, ultra HP tires aren't the best.
Can't speak for the AVID's, but after about 20K miles with the Eagle F1's, I'd buy them again in a heartbeat.

Since you're in the NY area, you'll get the best price from Mavis tire, www.mavistire.com. Call Mike J at the corporate office, 1-800-757-4291 for the best quote. I got the stock 235/45/17's for $151 each; mounted, balanced, and installed with a full road hazard warranty.

I bought Nexen N3000s at first at TownFair Tire because that's all they basically had. They suck, so I'm returning them and getting the Goodyear F1 A/S put on Tuesday. Love their 30 day return policy.
Getting them for $133/tire, so I thought it was a good price. Better than the Nexens. I asked for an all season tire & he recommended the Nexen N3000, which are summer tires.
They were reviewed well.

Hate to throw a wrench in your survey. But, check out, Potenza RE960AS Pole Positions.
I also live in NY...and wanted a great All Season tire. I needed a good quality, quiet tire in the summer that is great in the rain and also one that's superior in the winter. I narrowed it down to both those tires, until I came across Potenza RE960AS Pole Positions. Worth the extra money!

The Eagle F1 A/S was recently described by TireRack as, "A performance All-Season tire that seems to have lost its edge," whereas the W4S was praised as " A refined tire well suited to every day road conditions."
One common complaint about the F1 A/S is that they are noisy, an opinion born out by TireRack's testing.
All that being said, if you want a quiet & comfortable UHP, go with the Yoko W4s. If, OTOH, you are willing to sacrifice some ride quality, there are two additional economical choices you should be considering:
1) Goodyear Eagle GT: Choose this if you want to maximize your wet traction (these are far superior in the wet to the Yoko W4s) and want a great looking tire, and don't care so much about ride quality and noise.
2) BF Goodrich g-Force Super Sport A/S: Choose this if you want ultimate dry traction in an UHP A/S tire, and tread noise is a concern (this is a fairly quiet riding tire), but do not care so much about ride quality (not as smooth). This tire may not have the best-looking tread design, but it's a very high-tech tire (three compounds).
Finally, to those of you suggesting the RE960, can't you read?!?

I'd describe the ride home as -- my ass felt like it was shot with novocaine. (Compared to Michelin Pilot MXv4s). Very, VERY smooth. Then I hit a couple exit loops near my house too fast, at a speed the Pilots always whined about.
The Bridgestones spoke to me, too -- "MORE, PLEASE!" It felt like I was riding a maglev, I was that glued to the road. I could have done those 270-degree loops safely at least 15mph faster than with the Michelins.
I was beginning to like the TL all over again.
Later my wife called to report -- "They felt like sitting on a bouncy ball!" Perhaps not the most accurate description, but she was talking about those inflatable exercise balls (while going down the Parkway at the usual 85 mph).
One part of the good results were because the Bridgestone dealer had a Hunter 9700 and did a road force balance on all four. (He didn't advertise that or charge a premium -- just did it. Nice!) All four wheels were tightened the old-fashioned way, with an actual torque wrench. By hand.
And it didn't hurt EITHER that there were 2 in-store promotions -- an instant $50 off for signing up for a Firestone credit card, plus a $50 gas card from a mail-in / online rebate.
For a set of 245/45-17s (oversize by 10mm on stock rims), grossed up and out the door, $808 out of pocket. I'll see the $50 gas card in a couple months. Not bad!
Goodyear F1 Eagle Al Seasons, make sure you get the $50 rebate. You'll be happy with them, I'm sure. But to get the very best-rated tirerack UHPAS, you're not really talking as much more money as you might think... and Bridgestone will of course do lifetime rotations, etc etc.
Riding on F1 A/S right now (245/40/18). It has been 20k miles. Mostly highway. Tread is at about 50% with even wear. All Hunter 9700 Balanced. One tire was replaced after receiving them with 47lbs roadforce reading which is bad. The replacement had a 27lb Roadforce reading. I still feel a slight vibration in the steering wheel to this day at 60mph. Usually 15lbs and under is a good roadforce reading. Anything greater you'll feel. Wet traction is excellent. Handling is 7/10. Snow traction is 6/10 (in comparison with my BF Goodrich Studded Winter slalom). They're pretty noisy after first 7500 miles.
I'm tempted to buy them again but want to see if there is something better out there that is smooth riding(as in no manufacture defects and more round). Bridgestone 960 A/S next time to see what this hype is all about. BTW, F1 A/S is now #7 in surveyed results for the category.

One thing I learned that I didn't expect was that if you can get everything else ($$$) equal, a manufacturer's store is the way to go. If tirerack had sold us out-of balance rubber that was installed by a 3rd party, where would we go for recourse? (We'd probably just blame it on the tire.)
I have W4S 235/45/17 on my V70R - frequently driven in Germany at 120+ and good at 155. I am happy with the choice - very good in rain/standing water, reasonable noise, good dry traction. We have not had much snow to test them in. Also happy with the looks - had P Zeros on before.
