Decided to pull the trigger on some VMR wheels!

So this is my wife's daily driven TL-S (her third actually) and when it came time to replace her tires we talked about putting some 18's on it, since the difference in cost of tires from 17's to 18's really was negligible. We didn't want to spend a fortune but also wanted something more unique and better quality than some $100 wheels you might find on Ebay. I came across lots of wheels I liked but then as I am sure many on this forum have encountered I found that nearly all of them would have clearance issues with the Brembo brakes on the Type-S. So quickly our selection was narrowed down to about two wheels. One being the Enkei Nurburgring and the second being XXR 530's. But ultimately after having looked at some pics on this forum I decided I wasn't going to be happy with the "poke" the 530's would give with the only available offset that would work. And for the price of the Enkei's I thought I might see what else I could find.

Which led me to VMR. And specifically I have sockr1 on this forum to thank for leading me in that direction. For basically the same price as the Enkei's we got a custom powder coated wheel that so far appears to be of excellent quality. And I must say, the customer service at VMR was top notch, specifically their sales rep Tracy. Now in full disclosure we did run into a little bit of an "issue." The first set of wheels we ordered were the wrong offset (35+ mm instead of 45mm). This wasn't discovered until after the 17" tires had been removed from my wife's car and the new wheels and tires had been mounted. Long story short, Tracy handled the situation as about as well as I could have asked for and we did finally receive the correct offset wheels and some payment adjustment for spacers I had to buy to temporarily run the 35mm offset wheels and for re-mount and re-balance cost.

In the end the offset mess up turned out to be a blessing in disguise because the first set of wheels were powder coated in Brilliant Bronze ( a true bronze color) which my wife and I both really liked in pics but then were disappointed to find in person, and in combination with the color of her car, we both weren't really fans of. It was just too brown and was much darker than we originally thought it would be, or at least it appeared that way in anything but direct sunlight. In the shade and at night they basically appeared black and I'm not a fan of black wheels.

So since we were getting a "redo" Tracy and VMR were nice enough to let us switch our powder coating choice up. We ended up going with Titan Bronze (a more gold'ish bronze finish) on the second set and are much happier with how they look on the car. Neither my wife or I wanted a true gold wheel but did want something in that hugh, and that's what we got. And these, even at night, still have some "color" to them. I haven't gotten around to taking any great pics with the TB wheels yet but you'll get the idea from the pics below.

So if you skipped all the above just know the wheels are VMR V710's in 18x8 with a 35mm offset in Brilliant Bronze (first set of pics... with a 5 mm spacer up front) and then a 45mm offset in Titan Bronze (second set of pics) both in a satin/matte finish. And the tires are 245/40R18 Continental DWS06's. I went with a slightly wider tire than most recommend but I'm very glad I did. I don't like the tucked looked for one and secondly these fill the tire-to-fender gap up a little more and give at least a little bit of a wheel lip buffer should my wife try and curb them, lol. But they look and ride great.

Ultimately in the shade the TB wheels are about as dark as the BB wheels were in the sun. And then in direct sunlight the TB wheels definitely have a brighter more gold appearance to them and I think look great with the KBP paint.

You may also notice in the pics that the car looks lower in some of the BB pics. That's mostly because those pics were taken when we had the car loaded to the gills when traveling for X-mas. And then most of the TB pics above were taken with the car sitting on an incline so the front looks even more jacked up than normal. On a side note, I think I would like to lower the car just a touch now, which I said I wouldn't do, lol... any recommendations on the cheapest way to drop the rear maybe 1/2" and the front maybe 3/4"? Again, I don't want it slammed, it's my wife's DD, I'd just like it leveled out and dropped just a hair.

Anyway, I'll try and get some better pics of the TB wheels here in the near future and let me know what you think.

You're welcome! And I agree the second set just seems to pop and flow a little better, glad you and your wife are happy. Looks great! In my mind the 245/40 is the perfect tire size for a daily driver. I'm also on the dws06 tires and I love them! Tracy is great to work with and they have great customer service at vmr!

when you said enkei Nurburgring did you mean enkei raijin or tsw Nurburgring (looks like you made a hybrid name hahah)?

also can you clarify the offset situation? Did the 35 not clear because it was an 8" width instead of 8.5? I was told 18x8.5 +35 cleared brembos.

Also so what is the width of your new wheel set up for the +45 and does that clear the brembos without a spacer? Can you do a side shot to show how sunken in they are? I'm asking a lot of questions because I think one day I'll get some vmrs once I tire of my tsw Nurburgrings.

Lastly a a small drop would do a ton for the look of the car on new wheels. I would recommend tein street advance which does a minor drop and has a near stock feel but with better handling. And it's a great value too! (<$600)

It looks like I should have just gone to bed last night instead of writing this post... I messed all kinds of stuff up, lol. Sorry, see corrections below. I'd edit them in my original post but this forum doesn't seem to allow that.

when you said enkei Nurburgring did you mean enkei raijin or tsw Nurburgring (looks like you made a hybrid name hahah)?

I did mean TSW Nurburgring and not Enkei. Thanks for the catch.

also can you clarify the offset situation? Did the 35 not clear because it was an 8" width instead of 8.5? I was told 18x8.5 +35 cleared brembos.

Sorry for making this confusing, I got them backwards... the first set of wheels (Brilliant Bronze) were 45mm offset and required 5mm spacers to clear the calipers up front. The second set of wheels (Titan Bronze) were the correct offset (35mm) and fit without spacers. And both sets of wheels were all 18x8.5 and not 18x8.

Also so what is the width of your new wheel set up for the +45 and does that clear the brembos without a spacer? Can you do a side shot to show how sunken in they are? I'm asking a lot of questions because I think one day I'll get some vmrs once I tire of my tsw Nurburgrings.

I'll post up or take some shots looking down the side. But they are pretty much flush with the edge of the fender lip. Or bulge of the sidewall of the tire is flush might be a better description. Either way, they look pretty much perfect IMHO.

Lastly a a small drop would do a ton for the look of the car on new wheels. I would recommend tein street advance which does a minor drop and has a near stock feel but with better handling. And it's a great value too! (<$600)

Yeah, I agree. I don't really want to drop it much again since it's my wife's DD but going down 1/2 - 3/4 inch won't make her bottoming out on everything but as you said, will make a big difference on how the car looks. We're coming up on 90K miles on the car and I imagine it'll need new shocks anyway soon so at that time I'll probably bite the bullet. Thanks for the suggestion on the Tein setup... I'll look into that. Something else I considered was the A-spec setup because I've heard it is just slightly lower than the Type-S ride height but again while maintaining decent ride quality. But I'll have to see how the prices compare. If I can do all four corners for around $500 I'd be happy with that. We've got a second child on the way in less than 2 months so struts may have to wait for a bit. We'll see.

Wheels look good, especially on that color of car. The only thing I don't understand is the yellow fogs. Never understood them in the Subaru community either. Yuck. lol

Thanks Visual. As for the fogs... I'm just a fan but understand they aren't for everybody (same as gold/bronze wheels). I typically run at least a yellow bulbs in all my cars fog lights and then depending on the color of the car I may or may not use yellow film instead of a bulb. I like the way it contrasts with the blue in this case. And I particularly like it on black cars, which is what my Dodge Magnum SRT8 is. Fog lights rarely match the same color hue as the headlights, especially HID's, so if they are going to be different I'd rather them stand out a little. They look great, IMHO, with the white/blue hue of the HID's at night.

Ah, got it. There was a set that I once liked that had yellow in them, but they were mostly blue, and the two together looked pretty damn cool.

Love those wheels! I went with the XXR 530's for my DMM. Now I am having some buyer's remorse!

Bronze looks great with KBP!

I had to replace my struts at about 100k miles on my '06 Base. I went with the Tein Street Advance Z's. If you keep the dampening at 10 clicks below the firmest setting, they ride very similar to stock. At 6 clicks below, they are a little more firm, but still ride nice. They ride great on the highway.

As far as the A-Spec coilovers, I don't think you'll be able to find a new set. HeelToe posted a thread the other week offering a set-up that was meant to ride like the A-Spec coils, so you could check that out.

thanks for the clarifications ryan, i read your original post and it was opposite of everything i knew related to vmr, but all that is cleared up now! I'd like to see the side shot from the rear because if i go vmrs in the future i'd get the same wheel and tire setup but i wouldn't want it "too sunken in." i'm jealous of your 245 tires (right now i'm 235 on my 18x9 +32 tsw nurburgrings)

aspec suspension would be a nice middle ground for you but i know they have been discontinued and i'm not even sure you can locate them anymore. plus i think they ran into the 700-800 price range, so that gives even more leverage towards the street advance. just check out some of the recent reviews on the street advance, they are pretty sweet!

Thanks for sharing your wheel choice. The color isn't my cup of tea but if you and the wife like them, perfect! Glad VMR's customer service handled everything and made it a smooth exchange. Hearing that, I may try them out in the future! The wheels look similar to the XXR530's but look 10x better in my opinion. Might have to see what colors they offer. Damn you!

sockr1, I got around to washing the car tonight so I shot a few quick pics of the wheels from a few different side angles so you and others considering them can have a better idea of how flush they are.

I like your style Breezy, lol.

That's my Teal Terminator. It's actually a Fobra (fake Cobra) but you wouldn't know it unless you ran the VIN. I bought it from the guy that did the conversion (started off as a silver '01 V6) and painted it '93 Cobra Teal. Then slowly over the years I've upgraded with a built motor, bigger blower, lots of other go-fast goodies, Maximum Motorsports front suspension, etc, etc. Funny enough I just recently bought it back. I originally bought it back in '06, then sold it in 2011 and just bought it back from the guy I sold it to at the end of last year. It's good to have it back home.

Anyway, sadly I don't have any great updated pics of this car... I really need to take some. But here's a few that will get the point across:

Nice looking cars! Wish I never had to sell my 87 LX. Had a 351W bare block never built and sold that too. I had plans of doing a 408 Stroker with it. Would have been one hell of a ride! My dream car back then was a 03/04 Cobra in Black. Still have the Notch?

Man, I always wanted an old notch-back LX 5.0 like that green one (back in the day I wanted the SVO hood on it too). Anyway, beautiful teal car man, great wheels as well. Love me some Mustang goodness.

Yeah, I considered the 351 option as well but ended up just rebuilding the 302 and putting the money towards a blower. And no, I sold the Notch when I built the motor in the Cobra. Those were my only two cars at the time and I really didn't want to DD either of them, lol. Although originally that is what I bought the Cobra for. I will own another Notchback though.

Hey CarCrazy, due to my XXR's having issues, I am looking at dumping them and getting these wheels instead.

I had some questions:

- Any issues with shaking/vibration at highway speeds (70MPH+)? I noticed one of the wheels in your pics seemed to have a decent amount of weights on them. Two of my XXR's have 15-18 weights on the wheels and I am about 100% sure the balancing on them is the issue because they are so cheap.

- When you say you had them powdercoated - was that by VMR or a separate company? None of their wheels come in a bronze color and I didn't see anything on their site mentioning custom powdercoating.

NoTLoud, the wheels/tires balanced out fine. I have a long time friend mount and balance all of my wheels and I always have him tell me if there is any excessive weight required or if the road force numbers come up about normal. I feel like he told me one of the four was a little higher than the rest but that everything overall looked good. And keep in mind any "excessive" weight could be a result of a "bad" tire and not the wheel.

As for the powder coating, it was offered and done by VMR. Or it's actually outsourced but they always use the same shop. You can go to VMR's Flickr album below and check out all their PC options. It cost an additional $100 per wheel to have a custom powder coating done. And you'll actually see the "Brilliant Bronze" wheels that were on our car in their album, they're like the third or fourth wheel in.

And on a slightly different note, I liked the "bronze" look so much I put a set on my DD. I actually had been wanting these replica 20x9 bronze Hellcat wheels since before we ordered the VMR wheels... I just wasn't going to spend the money until I needed tires. That time came so I bit the bullet. Like my wife's first set of wheels, they're a little darker than I wanted but for the price ($705 shipped for the set) I can't argue. And I think they fit the "personality" of the car quite well.

Yeah, it's my DD. I had a silver Magnum SRT before this one that was supercharged with other go-fast goodies but decided to sell it to help fund building the detached garage you see in the background of the above pics. I just picked this black one up a little over 6 months ago. Great car for the money. Nothing fancy but a reliable drivetrain (cheap interior though), fun, practical with it's size, relatively quick, and different.

And you'll actually see the "Brilliant Bronze" wheels that were on our car in their album, they're like the third or fourth wheel in.

Thanks for the reply! Good to know on the powder coating. Looking through their pictures, I'm definitely thinking the Brilliant Bronze or the Textured Matte Bronze.

I'm going to get my XXR's roadforce balanced as my next step and then another set of hubcentric rings to rule those two items out. One of the hubcentric rings looks a little chewed up around the edges. I got poly-carbonate ones, may try some aluminum ones. Not sure what would be better.

I would be quite disappointed if one or multiple of my tires was bad, considering I paid good money for them and have put less than 1k miles on them. However, I would expect Discount Tire to honor their warranty on them and replace them for me for free if any of them were bad.

All I will say regarding the pics of their PC options on the Flickr album is that keep in mind that those were all taken in full sun at an angle that best shows the finish/texture of the wheel. Which isn't to say they are mis-represented but just keep in mind once on the car and in the majority of driving situations I think you'll find the color of whatever finish you are decide on to be darker than it appears in their Flickr pics. I know that is what I found with both sets of wheels we had.

And good luck with the rebalance of your XXR wheels and/or new hub rings. I liked that the VMR wheels didn't require such, they were machined to fit correctly.

I am looking to purchase the vmr 710's as well. Just had a quick question as I'm a total newb with wheels stuff and offsets and stuff.
I am going to drop my car on tein SA first, and then buy the vmrs.
My question is in regards to the offset.......the only threads I have seen with these wheels have been on TL's that have brembos.
So, the ops always have to consider the offset in order to clear the brembos.
I have a TL base, so im planning on running 18x9.5 +33 and tire size being 245 40 18...........
any recommendations from you guys?

Wheels look great.

First thing I thought when I saw the back of your Cobra was "is that the Teal Terminator from SVTP?" Small world.

Eric, I don't remember the exact numbers (it's been a while) but I want to say I had about $2000 in the wheels and tires.
