Damn NYC Pot Holes
Hit a hole today that I could not avoid because of traffic and snapped my front passanger side strut clean through all the way at the top. I did not plan on changing my suspension for a while if at all, but now that I have to i dont know which way I should go. Do you guys think I should just change the broken one? Change both fronts? Change them all the way around? And since they will be off anyway should I just go ahead and change the springs as well? What do you guys suggest, i have been siting here for about 2 hrs try'n figure something out, but my heads not clear cause im still pissed off.
Thanks you guys for any input

I'm 99% sure that springs last the lifetime of the car. As far as the struts go, I would use this as an opportunity to change them all out at once. Maybe even look into A-spec or aftermarket suspension. Good luck!

Yeah I can't stand the pot holes in NY there ridiculous! I would say if you didn't plan on changing your suspension at all then just change the strut. I don't know much on suspensions so I don't know if you can just change the one strut or have to do both fronts or all four, I would think just the one but I don't know. If you ever had thoughts about upgrading the suspension or lowering the car or anything, I would definitely do that now since it is already off.

I have been look'n around the site and A Spec suspension that (Type-DM 2004 TL) suggested sounds kinda nice. I emailed a dealer to get a price, will call some more tomorrow. (stvtec) it broke at the top. after i hit the hole and heard the noise i pulled into a gas station and had the guy throw it up on the lift. once up on the lift we could see right where the problem was. i could pass my hand(fingers) from one side of the spring through the bar and out the other side of the spring... I should have taken a pic

There is a way for NYC to pay for your damage. First you have to take pictures of the pot hole. Then write down the address. The city's comptroler's office has this form that you fill out and write out exactly what happened. You mail it in via certified mail including the pictures of the pothole the damages and a copy of the receipt. They will send you a check for the total amount of the damages. Call 311 so they can connect you or at least give you their number to start the claim. I hit a pothole and poped my front tire. i did all of that and the city paid me back.

dgcdblockdgc,
Now you know why I never installed the A-Spec suspension.
Think you've got problems now? Go ahead and lower the car. The potholes here in the NY area will be calling you every time you approach one. In the 7 years I have this car, I've met 3 TLers who regret ever installing the A-Spec because of all the bottoming out and resulting repair bills from damage, similar to yours
NYC road conditions and lowered suspensions DO NOT MIX !
