Consumer Reports High Performance Tires ratings

I just received the November 2013 issue of Consumer Reports and they have a pretty comprehensive review of "ultra-high performance" tires - both all season and summer. Hopefully this info will help out my fellow forum members when it comes to purchasing decisions.

In summary they said of the highest rated tires, Michelin tends to have the longest tread life. The points are based on several factors including tread life, price, weather conditions, noise, etc. Here's the list:

21 All-Season tires reviewed, but here's the top 10:
76 pts Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3
70 pts Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric
66 pts Continental Extreme Contact DWS (FYI - rated poor for snow traction)
66 pts Hankook Ventus S1
66 pts BF Goodrich g-Force Super Sport A/S
64 pts Cooper Zeon RS3-A
62 pts Uniroyal Tiger Paw GTZ
62 pts General G-Max AS-03
62 pts Nexen N7000

21 Summer tires reviewed, but here's the top 10:
78 pts Pirelli P Zero
78 pts Michelin Pilot Super Sport (these are excellent - I live in FL so they stay on all year)
76 pts Yokohama ADVAN
76 pts Nokian zLine
76 pts Continental Extreme Contact DW
74 pts Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2
72 pts Vredestein Ultrac Vorti
70 pts Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole Position
68 pts Toyo Proxes T1 Sport
66 pts Bridgestone Potenza RE-11

If you want one of the others that's not listed, just post and I'll see if it's reviewed.

James

Yep. Ranked at #14. Excellent treadlife. Below average wet braking (for the category) braking but above average for hydroplaning, dry braking, ride comfort and snow. 56 points overall.

Snow traction and tread life seemed to be the reason for the lowered point total (FWIW)

Tread life on DWS was horrible on my wife's 06 TL. Shopping for tires now to replace them.

What tires ranked in the top for tread life?

These reports are horse shit. I currently own and drive on Both the DWS and Motivo. Motivo's are 235x35x19 and the DWS are 235x45x17. I can tell you that the Motivo's are much better for every aspect of a driving experienc.

If you look at *only* the treadlife rating for A-S: top ranks go to:
Uniroyal Tiger Pawz GTZ (#8 overall score)
Nexen N7000 (#10)
Nitto Movito (#14)
Falken Azenis PT722 (#15)
Toyo Proxes 4 Plus (#16)

Above average for treadlife A-S:
Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 (#1 overall score)
Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric All Season (#2)
General GMax AS-03 (#9)
Yokohama Avid ENVigor (#19)

Movito's scored pretty well to fair in everything except for wet braking from 60 mph. Considering their Movito test price for 225/40/18 (all tires tested were this size) was $166 (same price as the F1s ranked at #2), according to their price vs. performance there were better choices.

I wouldn't blindly follow ratings from CR, but at least they're standardized for conditions, tire size and maneuvers, treadwear after 12,000 miles, etc. The same cannot be said for user reviews. I like to look at both, and since CR is a paid subscription (actually it was a gift) not as many forum members have access to it. So I share. No need to get your Twigs all bent out of shape.

My aren't bent put of shape. I waste $8 a month to have Web Access to CR as well. I just don't feel most of their reports are accurate. I much more rely on the tire rack reports. For instance, the DWS has 13mm user miles logged. They also break out all tires and testing by sub category. I.E. Ultra high performance all season, high performance all season. I'm sure you know this though.

I can tell you that the Motivo's are better than the DWS in every aspect of driving, including rain and snow.

I was running Nitto 555s for a while. They were pretty good for the money. But then I upgraded to Pilot SS. A whole world of difference. Everything CR says about it is accurate ( BTW I didn't select the SS because of CR). I found my tire, but for others the search continues.

Huh? I only pay $26/year for web access to CR.

19" wheel vs 17" wheel... there's no way to know if the difference is strictly the tire... just saying...
