I have a fresh set of general altimax arctic tires on my tl (slightly more aggressive snow tires than yours I think), and it did fine driving through some pretty crappy unplowed highways in CO last week. Braking was incredible, I could almost stomp on the pedal on snow-covered roads without breaking traction. Leave VSA on: if you enter a turn too fast and begin to oversteer or understeer, it does an excellent job of correcting your mistakes.
I was passing subarus and 4wd cars (with all weather tires) left and right. The only time I wished for awd was accelerating from a stop. Just drive carefully and you'll be fine.

You'll be more than just fine if the roads are plowed. If there's <3-4inches on the road, I still highly doubt you'll run into issues getting through. Just go slow so you don't slide around. Snow tires are effing amazing. If you're going up a steep incline that has snow, turn the VSA off before going up. If not, the second you lose power, the throttle will be cut and you'll start sliding backwards.

You're not a fool for trying to go there; you'll be just fine.

If the roads aren't plowed, and it's a blizzard out, you're SOL.

Listen to the radio.

Usually they'll advise you about road conditions and to go or not to go.

light snow you'll be fine, if they don't plow you're SOL on the extreme uphills; i've literally been bumped by sliding cars at killington/okemo/tremblant w/extremely shitty tires.

How'd you make out with the tires? I've heard some good things about them. I would venture a guess that anything under 4-5" and you'll be ok. It's the other driver's I'd be worried about.

continental makes excellent snow tires. As long as your tires have surface contact you should be ok. The problem comes if the snow rises to a level where you could 'beach' your car on snow where your front tires lose contact with the ground.
