Best Touring (quiet) Tire for 2005 Auto-Tranny?

Hi All,

Not sure if I am missing something, but I don't see any discussion of tire noise recommendation.

I have 35k on my original Pilots and they are close to dead. Dealer will only charge $275 each for replacements - lol.

I live in Phoenix area and snow is not an issue, rain sometimes. I do not take corners at 60 MPH, but I drive fast on fwy.

Any suggestions for quiet and good high speed?

The Pilots would probably be a good choice for you, just not at that price. I suggest you go elsewhere because those aren't $275 tires. Take a look at tirerack.com, to see what they should be priced at.

When I got my summer tires on my a-spec wheels, my dealer was happy to have my order the tires myself at Tirerack. I had them shipped directly to the dealer, and they dealer called me when they came in, and I paid the dealer a reasonable price to mount the tires.

Sounds like your dealer is trying to rip you off, I would go elsewhere.

Thanks for the response. I found that even CostCo would be willing to order the tires in. Discount Tire wants a crack as well, but neither one of them strike me as exceptionally skilled at mounting etc.

I wil check out the Pilots again

Thanks,

My priority is low noise/good ride as well. When my Kumho ASX became very worn and noisy at 16K I started looking for a reasonably priced alternative. The Tire Rack is a great resource since they publish reviews based on lowest, highest ratings, most milage etc on most tires. Check it out since the feedback from all the owners will be an eye opener . I ended up ordering Pirelli Zero Nero M/S based on their overall high ratings and will give a report on them soon. Good luck.

Pirelli Zero Nero M/S

I have Pirelli P Zero Nero M/S on my 2004 TL automatic. They run pretty quiet, although I can't really say how quiet, since I drive mostly on the highway (CA 101, 280, 85/87) and our roads here are crap...lots of bumps, potholes, 280 is especially noisy.

I've got almost 10K miles on these tires and they still have excellent tread. I don't race or drive agressively though.

try the falen ziex 512 E. I've had them for 22,000 miles and still quiet with half tread left.

Also Michelin are probably the some of themost expensive tires out there. I didn't say they were the best, but just $$$.

Look at the tirerack.com ratings as well.

I just bought Pirelli PZero Nero M+S in 235/40/18 yesterday. I haven't really had much time to drive them but when I do, I'll let you know how well they are. I had Bridgestone Potenza RE750s before and they were LOUD AS HELL on Interstate 5.

I had Blowtenza's on my Audi TT, and I didn't care for them either.

Wow - I really appreciate the comments here, everybody.

I am looking at tire rack ratings etc. I also have a buddy who should know such things and he mentioned that I am not likely to find a "quiet" tire for this wheel/vehicle.

I will report on the ultimate purchase, but I thank all of you who responded with sincere info.

Keep all of your wheel on the ground,

David

I just installed Pirelli Zero Nero M/S's and right now am very satisfied with the supple ride and low noise factor. But I have a feeling that all new tires will be riding better and be more quiet in the beginning. Once they wear down it seems to be inevitable that they get louder. Sometimes after only 6K, 10K etc. Usually aggressive tread patterns, low ratio, ultra HP summer tires will be louder than touring tires. Keep researching data and good luck with your search.

I would suggest getting Bridgestone Turanza LS-Z. My friend already has LS-V on his Mazda 6. They are super quiet, have great tread life, have great handling, and perfect for high speeds.

Falken Azenis st115 - a summer tire that is extremely quiet. I have been running on them for about 4 months. Some reviews say poor treadlife, but I have had no problems to date. Nice price compared to some of the other options.

He's looking for a touring tire (which is an all-season), and not a summer tire. Summer tires will have poor treadlife in general.

You can use TireRack to ship the tires to your dealership and then have the dealership balance/mount the new tires.

I notice that TireRack sells the Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 for $239 each and if you buy four, you will get $50 dollars back. In other words, free shipping!

I am putting the Pzero neros on my anthracite 04TL in the next day or two. I have the standard suspension and can't handle my EL42's anymore. I have managed 24,000 miles on them and they are not down to the wear bars...but are hard as rocks and noisy. I am going from the 17 inch rims to 18 inch Liquidmetal STATICs in chrome. They are 18x8.5 and I am putting 245/40/18's on them. I hope this setup offers better ride and noise levels. Tire rack speaks highly of these tires......Discount tire is doing the work. They matched the Tirerack price on the tires.....very happy with that. $156 per tire.

I just got a set of Yokohama AS430 which are v rated tires but they come with 60,000 mile warranty which I thought was unheard of in this size. I had the original turanzas and then the yokohama es 100 which were decent in the rain but had a lot of road noise. So far I'm really happy with the AS430s, more comfortable and quiet ride. The other thing I noticed about the high performance tires is that on the bad roads we have in St. Louis the car pulls and bouces through the ruts and potholes on the road. The lower performance seems to be negligable for all normal driving conditions. And they were 150/tire installed

I have my Pzero neros and Liquidmetal Statics installed. I am really happy with them. Even though I went up to 18's with 245/40/18 Pirelli's...it seems to be more quiet then the original EL's and especially since they had 24,000 miles on them. They were noisy and rode pretty hard. I have posted pics under the Tires wheels suspension pic link.

I would go with the Continental ContiProContacts. These are the tires I'm going to go with the next time around for my '04 manual and also for when my wife's '05 automatic needs tires.

Check them out.

Take a look at Kumho ASX or SPT models. I recently owned a 98 BMW M Roadster and replaced all four corners with the ASX model. Very high ratings on Tirerack reviews, both tests and users. I really liked them and they come with a 420 treadlife rating and 30K treadlife warranty. Also, they can be had for less than $120 per tire. Good Luck!
