It seems that spec's on 225/45-17 and235/45-17's have a minimum rim width of 7 1/2". I'm trying to fit the biggest tire I can on a set of 2003 CL-S wheels. I know 225/50-17's will work but am hoping for more.

Depends what your goals are.
You CAN fit 245/45/17 firestone firehawk sz50 on your cls wheels (i had them on 6.5 inch tls wheels) and they will LOOK good but by putting a wider tire on a narrower rim you increase sidewall flex so it's not ideal.
I'd say you should stick with either 235/45/17 (find out what brands people have actually tried) or 225/50/17.
In reality, however, you will increase performance the most by increasing the quality of rubber and sticking with 215/50/17 or 225/50/17.
