Another Staggered/black Wheel Set up

I have read the posts and know there are guys that hate black rims and others that hate staggered rims. I wanted to get in on the arguements but didn't know how to post pics. Well, I think I just figured out how to post pics because I wanted to piss some more people off.
If this works well I will post wheel specs in the right place.
Man, my kid is right I better lower it. The fender gaps don't look as bad in person.

Why would someone else get pissed off about your taste in wheels? Unless you are thin-skinned about people laughing at you, I don't think anyone here is going to get pissed.

What type of wheels are they? I don't like the staggered setup, but its your money and your car. I do like the style of the rims though. Good taste.

I know what your talking about man, but most of the Acurazine community appreciates people posting pics of their rides. (even if they think it's good or a bad) And just for the record yours looks great man..... Ya just needs alittle lowering.....And if anyone is a STRAIGHT ASSHOLES to you, Well then FK’em they probably don’t have shit to show anyways.....

I'd probably drop it about an inch. That should clear up the problem. Ride is sweet regardless!

Looks great, helps us AM guys see if black rims look nice.

What does staggered refer to? Are the rear rims wider than the front? What size rims are those?

Thanks guys. There was a similar setup on a silver TL a couple of weeks ago and the posts went on forever and some people were really belligerant . Anyway, like some said, I did it to please myself, noone else.
These are 3pc ROH rims. 8-9 months ago there was no real info on wheels for the TL, so I got with ROH and told them what I had planned and what I was looking for. It was a great experience. I was actually looking at 8" wide fronts and 9" rears and after working with them they were excited about going wider and didn't even charge me for it.
So, my fronts are 19x8.5 with an approximate 1" lip, we left room for the upcoming big break kit. The rears are 19x9.5 with a 2.5" lip. The centers look real similar to the RonJon Devotions.
I will post offset and other details in the rim section.

Are they forged? Plus is this a custom ROH fitment? I didn't know they did that.

i too am not feelin the staggered, but i dont know very many people that hate black rims.

i love black rims with a polished lip, or anthracite with a polished lip.

i think staggered rims should be with old school muscle cars. thats it. nothing else

maybe ferrari's or lambos

As long as cornering is not important to you, staggering is fine. That effectively increases the amount of understeer or plowing. If anything, you should have put the wider wheels on the front.

PoochaKannInc,
For ROH's 3pc wheel series you can spec almost anthing you want (offset, inside lip, outside lip) within reason of course based on brake setup, fender location and suspension components.

Sparky57,
If anyone can feel an increase in understeer you must be one of the best drivers and have one of teh best setups in the world. The effective increase from the 235 to 265 is less than 1.2" in width per side and the increased contact patch is probably a little less than that. On a car, especially with a commercial grade type suspension like ours, you got to be kidding me. This set up does not effect the type of cornering done by everyday drivers. I understand the theory you are projecting based on my weekend warrior type racing I have successfully done but for daily driving........

I guess I'm perplexed by "everyday drivers" who buy oversized 19" wheels and tires for cosmetic reasons only. Keep in mind the factory spec calls for a 3 pound bias to the front tires to further minimize understeer.

I am accustomed to the neutral handling of my wife's S2000 and enjoy taking freeway exit loops at brisk speeds. The A-Spec suspended TL does a pretty good job of duplicating that feel.

What do you mean? What other reason is there? How many people buy oversized wheels for anything else but show? I'd be suprised if 1% of people buy large aftermarket wheels for racing only.

Silly me. I buy a 150 mph sport sedan with sport suspension because I enjoy driving good handling cars.

I confess I had to break out laughing one day when I saw a FWD car with traction bars mounted at the rear.

I think what the earlier poster meant, is what is the "other" reason for buying 19" rims other than show? I admit I don't get what you just said either.

NYFENIXTL: Thanks for the quick response about ROH. I appreciate it.

I understand what he’s saying. The selection of larger 3-piece rims and serious rubber (nice choice, by the way) is incongruous, from a performance perspective, with the decision to use a wider wheel and tire in the back. Having larger rear tires on a FWD car makes no sense from an engineering perspective, and I don’t think (God, I hope not) that anyone would dispute that.

Of course, the response to that is that this isn’t an engineering decision; it’s an appearance-oriented decision. While I have no problems with that, I will continue to laugh every time I see it because my mind comprehends the engineering aspects and fails to grasp the appearance aspects that justify spending more money on bad engineering. No, I don’t get it – but who cares? What I do know is that the owner is happy and the guys in the parts supply chain for this upgrade are probably happy too. Good enough for me.

It’s good that we don’t all look at things the same way. If it wasn’t for the people who look at everything from an engineering perspective, we wouldn’t have cars. If it wasn’t for people who look at everything from an aesthetic perspective, cars would look like crap.

Lastly: Wider rear wheels and tires on FWD =

Aegir:

I see where you are coming from. However, what I am saying is that huge wheels and performance are also incongrous as they increase unsprung weight (just as the serious rubber and the wider wheels in the rear are incongrous). Just as the staggered setup is for show, so is the 19's. For show not go. I'm ok with that. Like you said, it is good we all have different tastes. It makes life much more interesting.

Personally, I would want to go with a forged 18" wheel. Where the wheel would weigh closer to 18-19 lbs, and it would be wider also for a larger contact patch.

Nice Tires! Don't care for the rims to much, but they might look better in person. You have effectivley dialed in more understeer to a car that IMO has to much to begin with. Have fun and enjoy the ride.

Corrrect. I find such setups on trucks and Hyundais less disturbing because they haven't killed what is an inherently good handling car like the TL. The last thing I want to do is turn the TL into my mother's Buick. It would take about a thirteen pound forward bias on the tires to iron it back out.

Hadn't heard that, but I did read that the Grand Prix GXP (FWD V-8) will have 18X8 inch rims in the front (255 tire) and 18x7 (225 tire) in the back.

For some reason, Pontiac engineers seem to believe that it will reduce understeer and produce more neutral handling.

Could you post some pics of the car at ground level, looking at the backend, so i can see the stance from the rear of the 265/30/19's.......... Please.......... TIA

And yeah, your kid is right, needs an A-Spec suspension ( best 1k I ever spent ).
