Another one of those "What tires should I get" threads (for A-SPEC rims)
Ok so I got some 18" Sparkle Silver A-Spec rims from a member here on the black market. I'm having trouble deciding what type of tire to get, but I do know I want comfort and grip if its possible to get both. I have 1000 dollars, give or take 100, to spend on tires. I was looking at Tirerack.com but having 87 options isn't helping. What do you recommend? Thanks

Out of those, if you want grip and a smooth ride, get the Continentals, (I'm assuming they are the Extreme Contact DW). The Bridgestones have a stiff ride, as do most Yokohamas. The Kumhos aren't even in the same league as the other 3 brands.
If you've got $1k to spend you can probably get a set of Michelin Pilot Super Sports. They won't ride as soft as the Conti DW but will be significantly better in terms of grip, steering response and build quality.

Whatever tire you purchase, get the 245/40-18 size, but you must first decide whether you want an all season tire or summer only type as the list contains both. Summer only will afford a better handling car, but at the expense of tire longevity and they can't or shouldn't be used when the weather is near freezing. A/S tires can see 4 times the mileage wear of a summer tire depending on the selection.
Once that is determined a selection can begin.

+1 Continental

I'll been leaning towards the Continental if it provides a comfortable ride. Me personally I don't care about the ride, but it's wife that would whine about it. I didn't realize I put a summer only tire on the list, I was pretty tired last night, but yes I would like an all weather tire. Turbonut why would you recommend at 245/40-18? I'm not looking for something competition wise, just a good tire that has good thread life, rides great, and grips when I WOT. I don't have anything crazy on the car, just a V2 Intake and HFPC.

In the end I decided on performance over a softer ride and went with the PSS. Getting them put on sometime this week actually

If this is the case then neither of the tires I mentioned will work for you

The Continental DWS is the all season.
Conti DW is summer.

Either way I will be moving from Tacoma, WA (rains for 180 consecutive days it feels like) to San Antonio, TX (drought FTW). I doubt I will actually "need" the all weathers, but it does thunderstorm in SA. So I think it's set, I'm going to see where I can get the best price for Continental DW

Onlinetires has them cheap but they charge shipping. Call up Discounttiredirect.com and ask for a price match.
you'll want summer tires for Texas lol.
Also if you want to...consider the Hankook Ventus V12 EVO. They have an $80 rebate going and you can price match them for $140 each instead of the $157 they want on discounttire. I'm going with them because they are cheaper than the Conti's and they're just about equal performance wise, as well as quiet.
Conti's are softer but tires have little to do with ride comfort, you may want to replace/upgrade the shocks if you've got a lot of miles.

Sweet. Now it just comes down to personal preference for the tires. Only thing I can say is the Conti's are less responsive according to tests. I think the Hankooks are a steal, but, you decide.

I got the Conti DW 235/40-18 in 91Y load rating for $600 shipped from Tirebuyer.com, with a free Nook Reader to boot. Awesome tire and the price is just an added bonus. And then there's the light weight as well. The 94Y is considerably more expensive. I'm running 38f/36r cold pressure and the car handles incredibly well with my suspension setup.

All seasons are great at nothing but good at everything. Summer tires are great on dry and wet but terrible in snow.
A good temperature limit I've been seeing while reading up has been around 45F. Meaning summer tires will give you the best traction in dry/wet as long as outside temperature is 45F or higher.
There are some trade offs with noise/comfort levels on some summer tires though so you need to research the tires. I personally went from All Season Touring Michelin MXM4 tires to Max Performance Summer Hankook Ventus V12 Evo tires. I actually found the Hankooks create less road noise and absorb bumps more comfortably than the all season touring. That and the huge increase in dry and wet traction was a win win for me. My all season Michelin's would invoke wheel spin and VSA on moderate throttle launches on dry surfaces and the same on careful launches on wet surfaces. My new Hankooks have taken wheelspin and VSA out of the picture on both of the same type of launches. One area that will suffer is tread life, meaning these tires may wear out around 25,000 miles whereas the all seasons could last me 50,000 miles. But I'd rather enjoy 25,000 miles of great traction vs 50,000 miles of lousy traction. If any if this sounds appealing to you, I'd give the Hankook V12 a try or even the Continental Extreme Contact DW which I've heard great things about as well. I wish I'd known more about summer tires sooner

I'm not too savy with tires and a lot of people have informative things to say, thus changing my mind. I completely forgot about the weather down south, as it hardly ever snows, but now I'm gearing more towards summer tires. I still have time to think about it but there are two different sets of tires everyone seems to mention, the Continental Extreme Contact DW and Hankook Ventus V12. After I get my TPMS, center caps, and A-Spec suspension from Ack, I'll take a trip down to Discount Tire and purchase the tires I set my sights on.

Not sure if you are looking for Summer or All Season Tires. If All Season I'd say get the Michelin Tires Pilot Sport A/S Plus in specific, they are very responsive, fairly quet and a long tread life.
