Alignment

Hey guys,

Going to get an alignment. After doing some research I was thinking of getting more of a performance based alignment although not sure if its worth it. I have stock wheels with 235 17" size Dunlop Sport Tires, most of the time I drive easy but on occasion I like to drive hard and I do a few auto crosses a year. Any recommendations?

your TL's stock alignment is based on performance.

that negative 1.7 camber in the rear DOE!!!!!!!

You're saying the stock TL spec for alignment is to maximize performance? Why do I doubt that?

^so, you're saying we dont have one of the very best suspension set ups?

The TL front suspension is a double-wishbone system with a rigid stamped steel upper arm and a steel lower arm. The system is functionally related to the systems used on Formula One and Indy Cars, and permits the best combination of road holding, ride quality and packaging for the TL. The system uses coil-over shock absorbers that, unlike strut suspensions, are not stressed suspension members. This reduces suspension friction and improves responsiveness to bumps. Suspension camber gain is maximized through the use of a short upper arm, while steering feel is enhanced through a high placement of the lower arm.
The TL rear suspension is a 5-link independent system with struts and coil springs. It mounts to a steel subframe to improve road isolation and provide a quiet interior. The rear suspension geometry adds "toe-in" when the suspension is compressed, improving handling stability over bumps and during hard cornering and braking.
we do have one of the VERY best handling fwd cars ever.

Wait, so the rear is a strut? I thought it was all shock, front and rear.

technically a strut is a shock/spring as one assembly. So yes we have struts on all corners.

^thats a definition of a Shock absorber. lol

Their intended sole purpose is to damp spring oscillations. Shock absorbers use valving of oil and gasses to absorb excess energy from the springs. Spring rates are chosen by the manufacturer based on the weight of the vehicle, loaded and unloaded.

a shock absorber is just the shock. a shock/spring combination unit is a strut.. or a coilover. Nowadays we usually refer to adjustable aftermarket suspension as coilovers, but technically even the factory units are a coilover design.

True old school shock absorber was a separate entity from the spring.

To me a strut assembly is a structual part of the suspension and replaces component(s) e.g. upper control arm, but the TL has upper/lower control arms therefore we have shocks.

As you can't change camber settings without aftermarket kits, leave the specs settings stock.
Now if you want to go all out, add the kits front and rear and go to town with neg camber.

yes, when i work on other cars, they have a separate strut and spring system, like the 2006 GTO.
