Aftermarket wheels and TPMS
hey guys,
new on this board. im picking up wheels for my TL soon and had a general question. this is my first car with TPMS and don't know much about it. im under the assumption the TPMS sensor requires a bigger hole for the wheel... true or false? the reason i ask is becasue im picking up a set of wheels and tires that don't have TPMS sensors. how will this affect my car???
thanks in advance

i believe your MID will tell you error with your tire pressure(since its not installed). you can still drive but the tpms is good for safety reasons. you can buy brackets for it and have a shop mount it on. i might keep my tl-s rims for winter so im lookin to get a second set of tpms.

The holes are the same for a TPMS sensor or rubber air valve, but depending on the location, the larger sensor stem with a nut might not fit in that area. If the threaded stem and nut fits, the sensor may not lay properly inside the wheel because of the various construction styles needed for the different wheel styles. If they don't fit properly because of either one of the reasons listed, purchase TPMS adapters that are available for custom application at the valve stem hole, or adapters that will strap the sensor to the body of the wheel.
Don't install the tires without the sensors installed or the beep will drive you nuts at every start along with the light, although it doesn't bother some, some will place tape over the light.
If you're spending good money for wheels and/or tires, do it right.

^^^^ The beep he talks about isn't constant. It happens only once every trip and you just reset it . You get a message in the MID that says TMPS error and once reset ( push of a button) its gone for the trip.
Then all you see is a very small "TPMS" in the inst panel.
I haven't had the TPMS in summer rims since I got the car. Never been a big deal.
As for safety they can warn you of a tire going low but no help in a blow out. They also don't react that quick. E.G. doesn't even notify you there is something wrong on startup. It takes a while .. Any where from 2 blocks to 3 miles . So if the tire is low initially your driving on it for a while ..
