Question 235/45/17 and TLS

I know this topic has been talked about and that Shoofin'TL tried them out on his CLS but has anyone got them on a stock TLS (no springs mods)? I'd like to make sure they won't rub before putting them on my car.

The other question is just how much will they stick out on a TLS given the 6.5" wheel? Anyone with pics?

Thanks in advance for your responses

I don't know of anyone who put 235's on stock rims. Kind of defeats the purpose. The highest I have seen is 225. The few members here who have 235's are on 7.5-8 inch rims.

Can you help clarify your statement a bit more? What do you mean by "Kind of defeats the purpose"?

Thanks

First off, I have a TL, not CL-S... Secondly, the 235's fit on my car based on my observations.. I chose to go with 225's to be safe.. I also observed that the '99's have less room under the fender up front than the 00-01's.. They seem to have more room...

I meant that if you are looking to go that wide, you won't get the performance you would get with a wider rim.

Kinda like putting a 64 mb Video Card in a computer with a 15 inch screen. You won't be able to get the full effects.

Thanks for the clarification. I used to own a BMW 328i and a 528i and liked their handling characteristics. I switched to the Acura because I am getting more for the money and the left over cash is better spent elsewhere. Anyhow, I went ahead and got the Yokohama AVS dB 235/45/17 tires today. I got Discount Tires to check and make sure absolutely no rubbing. I loved the new tires, the handling definitely improved (not to the level of the BMWs yet, but MUCH better than before).

So there, I answered the question on the largest tire size you can fit on a 2002 TLS, it's 235/45/17.

Thanks for everyone's help and advise.

Well, I turned the wheel as far as I can turn in both directions and there's quite a bit of room left between the tire and the wheel well. I don't normally do hard cornering in the first place so I won't be able to tell you at this time. The normal driving I do involves driving fast..

Looks good, but I think the wheels should be at least 7 1/2". 8" will probably be best. Any rubbing?

whats the width on the tls rim? the brochures for it say 7inches, which sounds ok for a 235. but some people said its 6.5, which doesnt seem safe

Acura's site lists the Type-S rim as 17x6.5 with 215/50-17 rubber. Fitting a 235 on a 6.5" rim is pushing it. But it does provide great rim protection!

I was thinking of getting new rims just so I could get a wider contact patch. Thanks Zman...you saved me money in the future. Just to double check...you have stock springs right? I wasn't planning on any mods since I plan to keep this car forever.

BTW.....235/45/17
I know that the second number is the ratio of the height of the rubber vs the width. Is that the width of the tire? (235mm in this case) or the width of the wheel (6.5 inch). Im curious because I want to know the total circumference of the tire vs the stock 215/50/17. Reason is, if you get too big of a circumference then your speedometer might be telling you that your going 80...but you're really going 85-87 which means more speeding tickets.

235 is the width.

45 is the height of the sidewall measured in a percentage of the width.
ie. 45% of 235.

You are right in wanting to keep the original diameter.

The perfect matches in 17 inch are 245/45 on the larger side and 235/45 on the smaller side. However, 235 could be too wide to fit so you would have to 225/50 on all-saesons and 225/45 on performance which is smaller but only 2% slower on the speedometer.

Check this website out and you can compare.
Our stock setup is 205/60-16 with a 6.5 inch rim and +55 offset for regular TL's and 215/50-17 with a 6.5 inch rim and a +55 offset for Type-S
