225/45x18 on TLS?

Will this setup work w/o rubbing? I've currently got 225/40x18's w/ 18x7.5 Italia AT S5 rims (+50 offset). The problem is that my rims got bent on a nasty pothole and I'm replacing the tires at the same time that I fix the rims. TireRack recommends this size since it is closest to the stock specs, but I wanted some opinions. I have Comptech springs as well, with a 1.75" drop in front and a 1.5" drop in back. Thanks for the help.

Tire Rack says it closer, but you shouldn't go with a larger diameter. Better to be going slower than your speedo than faster.

Plus you already know you won't rub. Don't chance it and tell them I SAID SO!!

I just bought those wheels. Its coming w/ 225/45/18. I have the comptech drop too. I should have them on Monday or Wednesday.

So, hows the ride w/18's and comptechs? Did it get much firmer?

The ride was noticeably better and much firmer w/ the 18's on. Handling was also greatly improved. What made you decide to go with the 45's? I'm worried about rubbing, but I also hate dealing with TireRack and trying to get the 40's. Last time, I had to tell them I had a Toyota Solara in order to buy them, since they're slightly under the recommended max. load per tire.

I went w/45's because I got a great deal on these rims w/tires (used) and also I've heard a lot of people bending their rims w/40's. I rather keep it safe and have more rubber on (no pun intended)

LOL! Yeah, me too (Pun intended:p)

Anyway, right now I have 18x8 +49 offset with 225 45 18's and the drivers side rear rubs (stock springs). It seems to be rubbing on the plastic tab which I need to cut off. But from judging from past experiences of others, it seams there should be no problems with 45's on a 7.5" rim. Don't know for sure though.

I guess we'll find out soon huh Ben?

DAN_F, my twin.

I had pilot sports 225/45 with absolutely no rubbing what so ever.
I have to say, I'm glad to be rid of those rims though... 2 bends in
2 weeks. That was with the 45 series. I've never had a rim bend
on me, let alone twice. I'd have to say, go back to stock or look for
a new rim brand.

I've got Michelin Pilot Sports in 225/45ZR18 and my wheels are 18x7.5" with 52mm offset (Comptech springs too). The 45 series front tires will rub but ONLY if you have the wheel turned all the way left or right and hit a dip or driveway too fast. Mine will rub the plastic on the inside edge of the fender if I go into my driveway or a parking lot too fast. Just go slow over the bumps. This will only happen with your wheels turned all the way to one side!. But maybe it's just my Michelins or I need stiffer shocks? :o It's very minor and no problems at all with the rear wheels rubbing.

I chose the 45's for more sidewall and 3/4" more to fill the fender gap. These tires outperform the stock tires in every way - but they are a little noisier on the highway. Otherwise I love 'em!

If you are not planning to drop the car, 225/45/18 will partly fill up the ugly wheel gap between the wheel well and the tire. Otherwise 225/40/18 will only make the gap looks bigger because of the smaller overall diameter.
