18 inch wheels - worth it? decreased mileage?

I'm planning on purchasing the 05 TL soon. I really like the looks of the 18" wheels. Does anyone know if they reduce the gas mileage on the car? How does it change the drive as far as performance and feel? Also, how much did you pay for the 18"? Thanks!

the overall change in diameter is so small that there will not be a noticable increase or decrease in gas mileage. when you increase the size of your wheels your tire profile is decreased to compensate for the larger wheel. you want to retain as close to stock overall diameter do not to throw off your instruments. so its safe to go with the 18 inch wheels as long as you get the appropriate size tire.

I would avoid 18" wheels because of the weight increase. Right now, I'm trying to find a light-weight 17" wheel, losing about 10 pounds per corner. Big difference in handling, steering and even acceleration.

Not necessarily... You can get light weight 18" rims... For example, these Work Emotion CR KAI rims in an 18x9.5" is only 19 pounds. The stock 17" rims are 26 pounds IIRC. (I can't remember if the A-SPEC rims are 26pounds or the stock 17" are 26 pounds). I think the 18x8 is 17 pounds, but I was looking at the 18x8.5" and 18x9.5" when I thought about ordering these. Not to be confused with the regular Emotion CR, which is cast with a different older process, and is about 4 pounds heavier...

I'm not sure if the offsets for these are compatible with a TL though... They aren't terribly expensive though, about $300 per wheel.

This shop is located near my area. If anyone is interested in this wheel I can call them up and save you long distance fees.

not if you buy a rim that uses a light alloy (like OZ Superleggera), or others that use magnesium in the alloy. it's really the tire that adds the weight. i went with the 18" OZ's and a Falken tire and although the rim was lighter than oem 17" rim, the rim/tire combo was a few pound more than the oem combo.

you also need to compare setups that have same overall tire height.

this topic was discussed in detail before, search the forum for "rotational inertia" to find the threads.

The acura aspec rims are VERY heavy....

i got them and noticed improved handleing right away.

off the line it may slow the car down, but i dont really care, cuz my LUXURY sedan looks sweet (and u cant go that fast in bay area anyways)

Sure, you can get 18" wheels that are lighter than the stock 17s. But those same 18" wheels would be even lighter in 17".

How much faster do you really want to go? Is their not speed limits where you all live. I say if your gonna go...GO BIG. I just put 20" Rims on my 05' TL with 230/45 8.5 tires and i love it. I've never seen heads turn like this. Acceleration and Braking were slightly slightly reduced but the thing handles like its on rails, its unreal. I am super happy with them.

Your gonna spend at least 33 grand and are worried about fuel economy? I just dont get it..

Its a little more rotational mass, you will lose a slight amount of accleration.. but not much.

Guys, this thread is like 11 months old ..... I haven't seen any recent posts by reigei. Just start a new one. There are numerous posts regarding 19 and 20 inch wheels that are much more current than this one. Just a thought for you

I went from 16 x 7 to 18 x 8 on mine at a 4# overall tire/wheel combo weight increase and the wheels I got were HP EVOs which aren't that light a wheel .. I didn't notice an acceleration / braking / gas milage change at all .. what I did notice was the firming of the ride and handling due to the lower side wall.

Unless your into AutoCross or racing a few extra pounds isn't really a big issue .. alltho being unsprung it does react differently than the same amount of weight in your trunk etc.

I'm interested as well. Find out how much it really cost for 18's and 19's. I have the 6-spd with the Brembos and would require a higher offset for the fronts. thanx

You do notice the last post before yours, was 5 years ago. I don't think your going to be getting an answer to your question. The last time that guy was online was about two years ago. Just though you might like to know.

Well at least the guy obviously used the "search" feature. Granted it's an old a$$ thread.

Lol. I've done this before too, luckily I caught it and used the edit feature before I got roasted. Glad to see he's using the search feature though.

If no one else caught it, I probably would've started replying back to those old posts. I already had something in my head for stock 17s vs light 18s lol.
