I've heard of this being a problem on the 18" "Chrome Look" finish A-Spec wheel. My service adviser told me to steer clear of that finish when I told him I was getting A-Spec wheels. My suggestion - since they are doing three, see if they will give you 4 of a different finish.

Sparkle Silver - Link

Ebony Chrome/Platinum - Link
The Ebony Chrome is what I have on my car:

There's also a Gun Metal finish that was only put on the A-Spec wheel available in 2004.

I think having crome wheels in general have that problem. A friend of mine had some RJ legends I think, and the crome peeled eventually. then he bought some " EXE" chrome wheels, same thing. maybe it's the way he drives, or where he drives, but I just stay away from crome.

I'm partial to the Ebony Chrome...for obvious reasons. The part # is 08W18-SEP-202E.

I've noticed that the paint on my Gunmetal A-Specs has started to fade and peel off. Then again they are 6 years old, so I'm sure that has something to do with it

If you are talking about the "chrome look" A-Spec wheels they are NOT chrome. They are painted to look chrome. None the less, you will have a hard time fixing this problem since a normal paint would be easy to touch up. Mine have held up very nicely over the past 2.5 years. It is hard to say without pics of your wheel.

I have a set of used 19" OEM MDX "chrome look" wheels and the clear is peeling between the spokes and starting around the centercaps. I thought they were the RDX 19"s when I bought them (diff bolt pattern) because the seller had no idea and thought they came off a Maxima, lol.

If starting with a new set I would keep them as clean as possible (soap/water) and apply some wheel wax to help protect the finish.

I have same wheels, same problem. I am considering having them really chrome plated, or maybe "black chrome" dipped. Or just replacing them. Anyone had wheels refinished? Mine are structurally in good shape as they are only on the car in the summer.. so its a shame to just pitch them.

are these centercaps interchangeable with, say stock rdx centercaps or other acura wheels?

Sorry to revive this thread.

I'm having the same problem with my rims (I'll post pics when I get home). I bought the car used a few months ago and the rims already had the issue... at the time I didn't realize they were ASPEC rims, so when I asked the dealer about it, they said they wouldn't do anything since they thought they were aftermarket. I haven't actually taken a wheel off to make sure it's not a replica set (if they make those), but apparently no one at the Acura dealership down here has ever seen an ASPEC rim before.

Anyway, the car came with the CPO warranty... do you think they would fix this if I do show that it's an Acura part, or probably not?

Since it's a genuine Acura Accessory part and you bought it CPO, they should fix it.

continuious use of chrome rims can cause this.. not just normal use i mean use of them thru winter causes the most damage with all the salt.. then obviously weather changes and all. thats why chrome is a summer kinda thing.. for winter.. i wouldnt use chrome rims just because they will peel eventually. expect the seal on the tire leaking due to chrome seperation aswell. only solution to that would be to grind the rim down to a smooth surface.. then prime the rim with a primer.. works best. the bead were the tire seats that is lmao.. just so that you dont go and prime ur whole rim

An update:

So I took my TL to a closer dealership to get some other warranty work done, and mentioned the rims. The service advisor said that Acura Accessory rims come with a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty, and since they can't verify when I purchased them, they wouldn't be able to do anything at that dealership.

I got back in touch with sales manager from the dealership that I got my car from, and he said to bring my car back in so he can look over it with the service manager. I did that this afternoon; the service manager confirmed right away that they were Acura Accessory rims, but because it's such a large claim, it would have to be approved by the factory rep, who shows up on certain Wednesdays and Fridays or something. He's going to confirm the next time the rep will be at the dealership and let me know, and I'll drop my car off and get a loaner. If it's approved by the rep, they'll get the replacement rims on while I still have the loaner (so I don't have to drive back and forth, etc).

I should mention that I pointed out the flaws in the rims to the sales rep before I even bought the car, so they wouldn't be able to say it happened as a result of something I did.

Pics still to come, had marathon training tonight and it was dark by the time I got home.

Pictures:

The amount the chrome is flaking varies from just the appearance of the clear coat missing, to seeing the black wheel underneath. Generally you can't tell from a distance.

The front driverside wheel.

Close up on some of the flaking.

One of the passenger side wheels.

Driver side rear. Probably the worst of the damage.

I bought the car used... I kind of think of it like a rescue case, since the original owner didn't treat it like he should have. Hopefully Acura honors their warranty without me having to put up a fight

interesting ... these "chrome" wheels actually do not go through the plating process they are just painted. so maybe this batch of wheels was prepped properly hence the chrome paint is peeling off ... gluck with the warranty proces the dealership will prob put up a little fight but it would think it should be covered

Good luck with the wheels.

Just some info:
Chrome is not very durable in the harsh environment that is why many manufacturer's are going with a chrome clad wheel, a plastic cap that looks like chrome, over the wheel and spokes. I went with a PVD chrome Acura wheel that is chrome coated then powder coated clear. It's amazing, nothing sticks to it and the wheels can be washed with water and a cloth and they still retain their shine after 3 years.

No disrespect to those who aren't feelin the chrome look Aspecs, but I have to say that it is THEE wheel for my wdp. I've got the same peeling issue and I've thought about having the wheels dipped in the real deal. I'd love to see a post from someone that had this done...
