17x8 vs. 18x8

Can someone explain to me the difference in the sizing of stock 17x8 vs. A-spec 18x8? I know the radius is bigger, but is the width the same or is it a ratio like a tire size?

Thanks.

The width of the wheel remains the same at 8 inches.

So, if I buy the a-spec rims, they will not stick out any further than the stock rims, however they will fill the wheel wells better? Better yet, will it provide a wider footprint? I am guessing not.

Width is the same but you get less sidewall on the tires; this supposedly leads to a stiffer sidewall (depending on the tires I guess...) and better handling.

Thanks. So if I purchase 245/45/17 for my stock rims, I will get a wider tire/look than the a-spec rims? Also, in theory, I will have more contact with the road, thus better handling?

18's r probably better for cosmetics but you may get increased performance and braking from 17's

Not sure about that. Yes, you'll get a wider tire but you'll also get MORE sidewall.

I'm not an expert, but I'd think less sidewall and hence a stiffer sidewall would be give better handling. At least better than a wider "mushier" tire...

Pimp, Why LESS performance from the 18s???
