17's too small?
I have only been on the site for a few days on and off but I've seen tons of great modded TL's. Most rock 18'sor 19's and I'm curious if most people feel that 17's are too small once you drop the car, etc.
I see a lot modded with 17's but thought I'd see what people thought.
Thanks

Bobby, I don't know how many cars you have seen on here that are modded with 17's unless they are modded and still have the stock base or Type-S rims on the car.
98% of the people on here will not buy 17" aftermarket rims to replace the stock 17's and 99% of the people will advise against someone buying aftermarket 17's to replace the stock rims because it is a waste of money.
I'm frankly surprised that this car came with 17's to begin with instead of 18's, but that is out of our control. I would highly recommend that if you are in the market for different rims, that you go with 18's or 19's. Either look great. 17's are too small and MOST 20's look way too big.

I disagree that it is a "waste of money" as I think it highly depends on the type of wheel. To me if someone goes out and gets a set of 19's that are $1000 and low quality then that is more of a waste...
Curious on what others think.

Agreed, if you buy a 19" rim and it looks like crap, then yes it is a waste of money, but looks are subjective.
BUT I am willing to bet that not very many people here are going to tell you to go and buy another set of 17" rims, no matter what style they are because there is no point in going aftermarket if you are not going to go bigger in size.

You answered your own question here. If everyone thought the size of the stock wheels was perfect, no one would have 18/19's. If you're just looking for the cheapest wheels possible, you can find budget wheels in any size. Just not sure what look/purpose you're going for.

I'd put it a little differently. If you're going to upgrade to an aftermarket style, you may as well upgrade the size - for better looks; better proportion - as well.

17" wheels are too small for the car, aesthetically, and were chosen by Acura for ride quality, and inexpensive tire replacement. The interesting thing is that OD of the tire is too small for the car as well, being obvious when you install the correct size tires with an aesthetically pleasing size wheel.

It would be lowered 2.5-3 inches. I'm working on a set of BBS RS 17's that are 9.5 and 11 wide so they will look good. I don't think I was answering my own question. I have spent a lot of time on car forums and often times there are the "preferred" look, etc. and this forum proves to be no different

Performance comes first so I have the stock 17s with 255 tires and the 13" brakes fit perfectly. With the smaller rims I can firm up the springs and shocks more without destroying ride comfort and for performance on real streets you want some sidewall. Too little sidewall decreases performance.
For those of you that are into looks above all else, a 13" rotor behind stock rims looks pretty large. Of course I ordered mine with black calipers so they wouldn't stand out. My car is low, much lower than it looks from a distance because the fender gap is reasonable. It's lower than many of the slammed TLs because of the smaller tire diameter and I still have good suspension travel and it doesn't have the slammed look. I hate the slammed look but I still have a pretty low Cg.

^ This.
I opted for 17's for weight and performance. But it's true, there aren't many that purchase aftermarket 17's. I think the TL's 17's look fine because of the larger lip. Aftermarket's can look smaller. If 18's and 17's were the same weight then I'd go with 18's. But since they're not, and in fact, are much heavier when considering the physics of rotating mass (along with a larger heavier tire), I've stuck with 17's.
The bottom line comes down to preferences. Larger rims will sacrifice a bit of performance but most would agree it's worth the aesthetic benefits. I'm strictly a performance man. The only aesthetic I care about is clenliness. No aspec kit, no tint, no 07-08 fog lights kit, no LED's, no facny tail lights, etc., etc., etc. There's certainly nothing wrong with those things. It's just simply not my priority. If it is for you, then go with 18's, possibly 19's.

The set I worked out a deal on are 5x114.3 (YES no adapters ) and 17x8.5 17x10.5. The RS wheels are around 16 lbs (I'm not racing it) which I like since you can definitely tell the weight on 18's and 19's. I had a set of 2-piece wheels and tires that were almost 50 lbs a piece.

Can fish drown in water??? Just kidding man I think it's about what ur needs are I'm new here too. I don't even have an acura yet but if I do end up pulling the trigger on the one I'm looking at its going to be between looks and comfort!

I opted to go with 17's for performance. I wanted something that would clear the Brembos, but would also be a lot lighter than the original type-s rims. I went with 17 inch TE-37 and I can tell the difference when I put them on in the summer. I feel that going with a larger diameter rim would kill the performance on a stock TL Type-S. Here is a picture this is when I first installed brand new 6-spd A-Spec suspension. It has settled now and I think it looks perfect.

I would just hate paying for 18-19" tires... The stock wheels look pretty decent on these cars, no intention of changing mine, maybe for Type S if I found some used cheap. If you don't care about ride/handing/tire cost etc get what looks good to you. Acura could have went with 18-19s stock but went kinda conservative with 17s, 17s are pretty much standard now so they're by no means big but not too small. They looked huge in the 90's, my Impala was one of the only cars with 17s back then, now everything has them.

I'm not trying to break anyone's balls, but I feel compelled to say this. This is not a high performance car. Staying with the 17's is fine if that is what anyone chooses to do. But, by putting on 18-19's as long as you're not putting on something super heavy, you're not really killing the performance THAT much.
When I have my 19's on in the summer, sure I can feel a little difference in the weight, but it's not that much to where I'm concerned about killing the cars performance. I'm not racing from light to light and I'm not tracking my car where I need to have all this weight reduced. Also my gas mileage hasn't suffered either by the little extra added weight.

Some people stay with the 17s for the ride comfort, performance, and lower cost of tires. You could flip the argument and say it doesn't make sense to sacrifice all of these things just for a little flash.
I understand doing rims, I did them on my other car but it was a victim of the '80s styling. The TL has nice rims for the factory. Most of the negatives of large rims are minor so I get it but I spoke up because of the people in this tread acting like 17s had no place. On the TL I would only do rims if I had to, to fit my brakes under them but luckily fitting 13" brakes under 17s is no problem. If I had to upgrade rims anyway I would probably get something nice. Another reason I've gone to the trouble of hiding my extensive suspension mods and big brakes, and not doing rims is I don't want to be associated with the stereotypical Honda crowd and the stigma that goes along with it.

well those there are 17"....i got alot of compliments for beeing a great size....if u get black rims...they may look bigger cuz of the tire/rim blend in...if u know wat i mean...droping the 3gen on 17" could look perfect if u fix the camber(or how ever u spell it)...

It should be noted that if you want black wheels, it doesn't matter what size to get. If you had 16" black wheels, they would look the same as 20" black wheels when they're rolling. When everything is black it all bleeds together from a distance so you can't tell where rim stops and tire begins.

This is one of the 10.5's. I'll have them Friday so I'll throw one on and take a pic to show width on the car.

Wow! Thanks for that! I'm gonna get black 13 inch wheels and save a TON of money on tires!!
