05 TL+ Wife (Not so good driver) + I want Wheels!=?? Help!
ok so here's the deal. I would like to put a set of wheels and tires on the 05 TL that I just bought for my wife. I would like to go with a set of 18"s, however I have a few concerns about that I need to address before going out and getting a set of wheels. I am not planning on dropping the car. Here's are my requirements. Can anyone please make a few suggestions.
1. I don't want the car to look like a 4X4 as I have no intention of dropping it.
2. I want the tires to somewhat protect the wheels ie from pot holes etc as, (my wife is not the best driver)
3. I want the ride to be comfortable as I have a baby on the way
I have read many of the posts in this forum with various rims sizes and offsets that other members have chosen, which has totally confused me.
Please can anyone make a recomendation on the following
Rim SIZE?
Offset?
Tire Size?

I have 18's on my car with the stock suspension and it looks just fine. Pictures are in the photo thread if you want to see it.
I have 18" RonJon Inspyres which are
18x8.5 with a 42mm offset.
My tires are 235/40/18 - Toyo Proxes 4
Some people have gone with tire size 245/40/18 which would give more rim protection due to a wider tire and put a little more rubber between the rim and the road thus softening the ride. I did the 235's because they look more low profile and are closer to the stock diameter of the 17" wheels and tires that came with the car. I think the 235's on the 18's ride pretty nicely as well.

18's would be ideal because you want a cushioned ride. I the only thing is that if you get rims with a lip thats 8.5 inches wide, i would go with 255/40/18

Go with a 255/40/18 tire
I would go with 18 x 8 or 18 x 8.5 in wheels with 255/40/18 tires. I live in MI and wanted some extra rim protection. I have the full A-SPEC package which sits a tad lower than stock and I have had absolutely no tire rubbing concerns. I went with the Yoohama Advan Sport tires and they are the best tire I have ever owned on a vehicle. Handling in my opinion seems better. That is my two cents on the matter.

I don't think 255/40/18 is that good an idea. The computerized instruments on the car are all calibrated using the stock rims and tires which are 235/45/17. The 255/40/18 tire size differs in diameter from stock by 2.73% which is too close to the universal difference limit of 3%, in my opinion. 1010Tires online has a wheel and tire calculator you can use to find these differences. If you want some rim protection at the lip it seems the better size would be 255/35/18 which only differs from the stock diameter by 1.19%. One of the reasons I chose the 235/40/18 is that it almost exactly matches the stock diameter....only a 0.32% difference.

My car currently has 245/45/18 tires with 18x8.0+45mm rim size. I previously had 235/40/18 tires 'cause rims came with tires ,and honestly....I think the riding quality was
. 45s are much smoother, and looks very nice as well. Take my advice and go with 45s

If you want to protect the wheels from the potholes, stay with the 17" as the higher sidewalls provides more shock protection and provide a better chance of having a more comfortable ride.
The brand and model of tires will also play a very important role in providing a comfortable ride.
Locally around here (Quebec) the roads are in so bad conditions year round that 18 inch wheels and tires on the TL is a very bad choice unless you are willing to put up with the repair cost of having wheel and tire replace.
If you still want to try the 18" sizing option, try to find a dealer which will let you try them on or go to the local Acura dealer and try to get a roadtest in a TL equipped with 18 inch wheels for comfort before you commit your hard earned cash.
Best regards

2. You'll have to stick with thicker profile tires to avoid that, or just drive slower and avoid pot holes period.
3. If you're having a baby on the way, you should really spend the money on the baby instead.
