Won't move in gear

Okay for one I'm new here so my bad for any mistakes I might make. I own a 2004 TL automatic transmission, 126,000 miles. Car had no problems at all drove perfect not even a oil leak. Two days ago I was driving, I stopped at a stop sign, as soon as I hit the gas to make a left turn I heard a loud BANG!! Car wouldn't accelerate and was stuck in drive. I pressed the shift release button and was able to shift between reverse and drive but doesn't move in either one. I even shift over to the left to manually change gears but still doesn't move in any gear. When I shift through gears I get no kickback like the gear is being selected. When you try to put it in park the pawl makes a horrible grinding noise, so I have to put car in neutral, shut it off then put it in park. I would appreciate it if anyone could give advice on what this might be or send a link for a solution to this problem. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like there's an issue with the axle where it meets the transmission or the transmission is ded

Due to the fact it's been raining pass couple days I didn't get a chance to look at the car. So I finally got a chance to go out an inspect and sure enough the driver axle is completely broken right before the rubber boot on the end that connects to the tire. Hopefully it didn't mess up anything in the tranny, I work for a parts store so I can get a new axle really cheap. I'm still puzzled how it jus broke without giving any signs at all. Thanks for the help.

Since this car is a front wheel drive vehicle, the front end suspension gets beat up pretty badly.

Axles break; not real common, but common enough, especially if they are cheap aftermarket axles.
