whining sound emitting from engine bay, wtf?

Hello fellow members, I have a dilemna here with our 20k '06 and would appreciate any insight on our problem. We noticed a few days ago a whining sound intermittenly visited us at odd times. We pinpointed the noise from the engine compartment and after trying a few things we also uncovered that the sound only occurs when the car's in gear. Nothing is out of the ordinary as far as ride, vibrations, or any other negative factor. This makes us a little weiry as to the "what if's" when my wife is going to work one day.

On another note, I noticed the other day a newer Honda Pilot was making a similar noise while attempting to park. Is this a common noise associated with the honda product or what? I cannot forsee this noise as anything inviting for the long haul. Gracias folks!

Hmn.. I once drove with the music off at night.
It was aprox. -11 C[not F] and I was speeding it like crazy down the road (hit about 140km/h in a rather short period of time) and during that entire time the car was generating a whining noise or a uh... winding-up noise. Would that be due to the same situation?

Power steering pump and O ring.
Just got my car back last night. Same year, same mileage.
Brought it in for maintenance, mentioned noise in engine comparment(after already knowing people were complaining about this issue), got a call later that afternoon that my pump and O rings were changed free of charge. Picked up last night, like new!

Don't wait any longer, not worth the worry.

Hey thanks guys for the responses, very helpful . I'll have the techs check that about the power steering. However in my opinion I really think it's something derived from the powertrain. Everytime we put it into gear the noise comes about but when we place it into park or neutral the noise stops. I am by far no mechanic it's just what my wife and I have observed over the past month. Also as mentioned before I noticed a Honda Pilot making a very similar noise in a parking lot one day, is that a typical noise of Honda products or what?

I don't know how common it is among Honda products, but I also had a light exhaust cover rattle. Mechanic mentioned he took care of it...

sorry to bump this, but did you find the solution? From what you described it sounds similiar to my current problem which is NOT the Powersteering issue, I have had mine fixed already, this is totally something new.

Mine makes the same noise while it is in gear as well, sound is emitting fromthe passenger side near the belts and crank pulley...just wondering if you got it solved ... thanks!
