What the hell happened?
What the hell happened?
I was driving to work and all of a sudden my car sounded like a go kart engine. Doesn't look good, and it looks expensive. It is a '06 Tl with only 65k miles. I just got an oil change 2 days ago as well.
Sorry, I didnt see the pic the first time. Looks like you blew a spark plug somehow. Did you just change them? Maybe it came loose?? I have seen this on happen on another thread a while back.

No, I didn't change out the plugs. No car maintenance has been done on the car except oil changes etc in the last year. The car has only 65,000 miles and is a '06. Just trying to figure out if the people over at the xpress lube did something that would of caused that or how that would happen.

Seems to be an issue on '06 acura tl with manual transmission...hmmmm

Well from the sounds of it you MIGHT be in ok shape. I haven't seen it happen to a TL, but a friend blew out a spark plug in his vehicle and it made the car sounds like a lawn mower (just like you described). So if that's the case you might only have to put in a new spark plug and your good to go. Well now that I look at the picture again your gonna need another coil, but those are easy to find and shouldn't be too expensive.
So my vote goes to buying a new spark plug and coil and you should be all set.
Goodluck!

i don't think it has anything to do with a specific MY. there is a larger thread about the spark plugs ejecting themselves. perhaps you are one of the unlucky ones with a loose spark plug.
could be coincidence with the quick lube place or they went nosing around your engine bay.
the fix isn't going to be cheap.

The spark plug blew out. Did you have a ticking sound prior? If all the place did was an oil change this is just coincidence (for once). You can only hope the threads in the head weren't damaged. If you're lucky you might get away with just a new plug and coil. If you're not lucky you're looking at head repair/replacement. Personally I would helicoil the threads if possible. Have the plugs ever been replaced?
For now, take a look at the threads as best you can. If they look decent screw a new plug in and see if you can tighten it snugly. You may want to check the tightness of all plugs as well.

Yes, the car started making a ticking sound last week. I was going to have a friend check out the ticking noise on tuesday who works as a mechanic across town. But, I guess it is too late for that.
It definitely launched your spark plug out of the engine. I can't imagine how that would be possible without damaging the threads in the head. Your mechanic will probably need to re-thread that.
Mechanic just called...he wants a $1,000. Repairs - helicoil because it stripped, all new new plugs, new coil, he said the valve cover needs to be replaced so that they can re-thread it with the helicoil kit. That part sounded fishy to me. I told him that it sounds like a lot because a few others have had the same problem and spent under $300. He said the helicoil kit alone is $325.00 Does this sound about right for a quote, a $1,000?
Preeeeeeetty sure you don't need a valve cover, wtf. Find another mechanic possibly. Gotta say, I've never heard of spark plugs launching themselves out of an engine. Then again, I'm not really that experienced with cars. That would scare the hell out of me.
x2. WTF???
Can't say for sure without looking at it, but at most I'd expect you need:
1. Helicoil
2. Spark Plug (list price ~$20, discount price ~$15)
3. Coil (list $97.32, discount $72.99)
I assume he will also scope the cylinder for damage and any SP pieces that may need to be vaccumed out?
You only have 65K on the car, the other plugs don't need to be replaced yet. But I'd check all the other plugs to be sure they are torqued to spec (13.1 ft-lbs). And be sure he uses anti-seize on the new plug and torques it to spec.

Heck, for $1000 you should be able to get a timing belt/waterpump/tensioner/serpentine belt change, spark plugs changed, and a valve adjustment....

Alright, car is fixed. I took it to a local mom and pop type place and he charged me $422.00. I took the car there before for some minor repairs. Should of known better than to take the car to a big corporate mechanic shop.
plugs - $77.94 NGK iridium (6)
c.o.p coil $76.25
thread rep. kit $39.95
Labor and tune engine and repair 1 hole $215.50
Much better =)

Check out Ford trucks with the 4.6 and 5.4l. At least the TLs problem is not likely a design defect such as not enough threads in the heads. I just fixed my friends lightning that was about to eject a plug.

Same problem happend to me last night scarred the hell out of me. Getting it fixed tomorrow, Honda should do something about this. It's a common problem from what I've seen and its happening to all of the V6's.
This sh@t happens only to a few people nothing to worry about, right?
Well, I have 2008 TL with 76K miles, absolutely no knocks or foreign noises, just a wonderful sound of Honda engine.
So today I decided to check spark plug #5 (everybody should do it, takes less than a minute). I didn't have a spark plug socket so I used screw driver and to my horror spark plug was wobbling up and down.
Once I got right socket I used two fingers to remove the spark plug and it looks almost like new.
Spark plug #4 and #6 had no issues.
Thank you guys for saving me from painful disaster.

One problem has led to another. The car was fixed like I mentioned earlier but now my check engine light comes on. I had the car hooked up to a computer and it is a P0430. Turns out that bad plug made my catalytic converter defective in low bank 2. I thought I was out of luck until I heard of the the 8 year 80,000 mile emissions warranty. Taking the car to the dealership on Tuesday. Hopefully, it is fixed under the warranty and they don't give me any crap about the spark plug that blew out. That shouldn't of happened anyhow.
They will notice it when they pop the hood. It was the front middle plug that ejected and the coil that was replaced says "Made in japan" on it. It doesn't look like the others so they will know that at least the coil was replaced.

Here is the 8 year 80,000 mile warranty for emissions from the gov. Looks like I'm covered and unless I read something wrong the ejection of the spark plug would have been covered as well.

As a precaution I checked my TL and Pilot plugs and they were torqued fine. I have 53K miles on the TL and 85k on the Pilot. I haven't changed plugs in a long time and my heart skipped a beat when my deep socket disappeared in the hole- boy those suckers are deep in the engine! Those coils are long and actually are hard to remove out of our Pilot engine because of clearance issues with the electric fan- the TL is much easier in comparison.
Check them often... even if they have never been touched since they left the factory. My #5 plug just cost me a motor and $8,200. Plugs were original and not part of scheduled maintenance intil 105K. I had 77K on the car when the plug blew. As I'm not the original owner of the TL, Acura would do nothing for me even though it is only 7K out of the powertrain warranty. Major rub is I own three Honda's and two Acura's but still no consideration. This TL I only bought 4 months ago!!Lesson learned I suppose. Schedule maintenance or not, check plugs no less than every second oil change. A small price to pay. One loose plug can do untold damage. I hope to have my car back by the end of the week. Found a used engine with 40K on it to replace mine. Repair shop will go over it with a fine tooth comb before installing to insure there are no surprises. At least it will be covered with a 12mo./12k warranty.
Do your self a favor... even though there isn't likely an issue to be found...check them!!
Based on my recent experience, I pent a couple hours on the weekend checking them in my Accord, Civic, Integra, Odyssey and even my Toyota Tundra. I left the CRV alone as it only has 4,600 miles on it. Spending 30 minutes is well worth the piece of mind. I have never had anything like this happen in any of the cars I have owned over the past 30+ years but let me tell you one expensive repair changes your mindset. Good luck with it!!
