Weird odor coming from vents

So whenever I drive and decide to let the air from outside go into my car, i smell a weird odor coming in. I can't really describe it but I know it's not normal. Any clues what this might be?

You might have mold in the vents. First, spray some Lysol in the A/C vents under the hood with the air running. Then, change out your cabin air filter.

Make sure no critters have taken up residence in the car. Has it been sitting for any period of time? There was a thread by a guy who had squirrels or mice get into the ducting---chewed up some wiring, too. Nasty!

You must've left your A/C on...if not, hopefully there aren't creatures stuck in the vents.

Try spraying Lysol with the air running into the A/C vents under the hood, and even into the vents in the interior of the car. Then, try changing out the cabin air filter and hope for the best!

Open up your hood. Look at the back towards your wipers. You'll see vents run all along the width of the hood.

I'm glad my problem answered other people's problems as well! I had my car detailed today and told the dealership about it and they took care of it for me. My car smells like vanilla.

I have same thing when i turn on A/C, cant describe it really. Kinda sour mildew smell id say. Anyhow had the car at my local dealer for an oil change. I mentioned it and they supposedly took care of it. Sure did, sprayed something on those vents in the cowl and whatever it was it FADED my wiper arm bolt caps with light white spots or whatever and to top it off the smell was so strong had to roll with windows down for a few days or it made u sick. Best part of all this is, after 1 week maybe a few days longer the smell is 100% back. Oh and my caps are still faded. I let them know and next time im up there they will check it out and replace if need be.
