Transmission revs when braking
Transmission revs when braking
Hi all! I have a 3 month old 2006 TL with 2800 miles on it. When I brake to a halt, the engine revs up during deceleration, sometimes up to over 3,000 RPM. The problem is most pronounced when I am travelling at over 50 MPH and I brake quickly all the way to a stop. It seems as if the engine is shifting back down through each individual gear as i brake. Sometimes, the engine will rev up once, then fall back to 1,000 RPM or so as I decelerate, then rev up again, all in one braking session. If I am travelling at a slower speed, or I do not brake so hard, then the car will only rev up to 1,500 RPM or so (and the problem is largely unnoticed).
Though this problem is really more of an annoyance than anything else, I do consider it a safety issue as well, because if I need to do a panic stop and the car revs up (giving it a burst of speed) I may not be able to stop in time.
Just wondering whether this is normal behavior, or what the cause and solution are before I take it into the dealer. If anyone else has had this problem or knows what the cause may be then please weigh in. Thanks!

This is normal and you may think this is a safety issue, its not. It acutally helps you stop the car faster when the engine is in a high rpm. This is part of the Grade Logic system of the transmission. When the car is going down hill, it will stay in a lower gear, thus reving higher in the rpm to reduce the speed build up when going down a hill. I think it also downshifts when you brake hard on a level surface.
