So I just went out and adjusted the heat shield, and it worked!!! No more noise.
It's surprising just how little you have to do. I simply got underneath the car, and pushed the heat shield up with my hand.
It moved ever so slightly (say about 1/16th of an inch), and when I went for a test drive, the noise is now gone.
I probably need to go back and tighten the head shield bolt so it doesn't slide down again.

so i was going up a hill in my 03 tl type s and it slipped into neutral today. you can feel it shift into gears as well and does make a slight high pitched whining sound. is my tranny done for?
