Transmission Problem or Rev-Matching??
Transmission Problem or Rev-Matching??
I had my transmission rebuilt about 8 months ago. It has been running perfect but now I'm starting to notice some different behaviors from the transmission. I've put about 15K miles on it.
Say I'm leaving my house and driving in my subdivision accelerating to around 25-30mph, I would release the throttle and I feel a noticable "CLUNK" from the transmission when the transmission goes into 3rd gear I believe. It doesn't happen every time but more frequently.
Next thing, I'm waiting to merge into traffic at on ramp or about to pass a car on a two lane road. I smash the throttle going about 50-55mph and the revs rise instantly to around 5,000rpms and hold for a second and the car will then accelerate from 5,000 rpms in 2nd gear....It doesn't feel like a slipping transmission but more like a "rev-match" since the RPMs never fall once it's in the selected gear or the typical slipping then catching feeling which is a trait of a failing transmisson . I know for a fact the TL doesn't have a rev-matching ATX. It does this from around the speed mentioned above (around 50mph) and only when WOT and car is going into the passing gear which I believe is second gear. This behavior also doesn't happen every time either, only after long trips or hot days, it's almost like the car gets confused.
What are your thoughts on this issue?

My car has the same "clunk." My road is downhill out of my neighborhood and it's almost as if when I take off, I'm on the gas from 1st-2nd but I let off when I hit about 35 mph (which is right when it's about to shift to 3rd) and I feel like a slight clunk. Almost like I'm tricking the tranny. BUT, if I stay on the gas and let it shift, it's as smooth as silk
I haven't noticed this for about 2 weeks though.
If your in 5th gear and around 55mph, pedal to floor will put you in 2nd gear. 2nd gear is good to about 68mph. Sometimes the pcm can actually get confused on which gear to put you in if your speed is close to the end of the lowest gear you can downshift too.
How many miles on the car? How many miles when the trans was rebuilt? Did they replace the 3rd and 4th gear pressure switches when they rebuilt the trans? My guess would be NO. What fluid are you using?

Sometimes a thump from gear to gear could be bad motor mount. Check the front motor mount for leaks and signs of cracks.

You're correct. Thanks.
I had thought it would only downshift one or two gears.
.... For faster acceleration when in D,
you can get the transmission to
automatically downshift by pushing
the accelerator pedal to the floor.
The transmission will shift down one,
two or three gears, depending on
your speed.

Car had around 177,000miles when the rebuilt was done.
Shop put in OEM fluid and changed out the 2 pressure switches.
The car now as 190,6XX miles.
I got on it about 3 times on my way home from work today to try and get a video of what the car was doing and of course it works fine.
I actually recall having the car do this around 89,000miles and called the dealership but they told me if I couldn't re-create the action it would be pointless to try to bring it in and troubleshoot it.

Reading up on InAccurate RAcing ATF THRead I came across this.
This describes it down to the T what my car is doing.
I'm ordering the Redline Racing fluid now!
I encounter something enlightening recently. I discovered an explanation to a mystery that I have lived with for years. During hard downshifts as I aggressively go wot at around 60 mph, my trans would get confused and stumble over itself. The car would not be pulling during this brief period of confusion. This would happen very seldom, about once every month or two months. I had just learned to live with it. But, I have always wondered what was going on with the trans. I would just think "Damn stupid computer".
I now know the cause. The first day after my first change, I was fortunate enough to have this situation occur. Here is what was happening with my previous Mobil 1 fluid.
As the trans performed an aggressive wot downshift at 60mph, the trans would drop into 2nd gear. But, the PCM would decide to shift into third gear BEFORE the trans actually completed the downshift into 2nd. So, this created an illusion of a stumble as the trans was almost dropped into 2nd and then shifted into 3rd... all happening as one continuous event. Messy.
Now, with the racing fluid allowing the shifts to occur quicker, this same event produces an awesome exhibition of shifting performance. The PCM downshifted and grabbed second and immediately shifted into third.
The difference here is that the car was pulling the whole time. And, the shifts occurred so close together that my mind did not have time to comprehend what was happening until a few moments later. Instead of a convoluted mess of the two shifts stepping on each other, producing a moment of confusion.... now I can perceive two distinct separate shifts occurring extremely quickly.
