Transmission Problem?

Tried searching but found no answers. I have a 2004 TL Auto. When I tunr on the car and drive, it shifts 1,2,3,4,5 normally until I stop and go again then it starts too slip gradually. It will even slip completely. Until I turn off the car for about 10-15 seconds then the car shifts normally again and does the same thing all over again. Could this be the computer or the solenoid?

how long have you had the car? current miles? ever have trans fluid changed?

no flashing lights on the dash?
How does the fluid smell- burnt? sugary burnt? brownish color or what?

When you say slipping do you mean you apply gas and rpm goes up freely- with liitle motion of the car- same as a manual trans car when clutch fails?
Or it takes 5 seconds for the gear to engage and go forward?
Thru the gears its slipping on each one?
Suddenly happened.. or its been getting slowly or quickly worse?
What do you mean `after first stop`- stop sign,, or turned off car at destination
then it acts up
Trans Heat has a lot to do with trans symptoms
wait 15 minutes and restart if it acts up really bad-flashing dash lights-- that will usually let it rest/reset and get you home or off the freeway

take the car to the big AA name trans shop for a free eval- they can ck if any stored codes that will give us clues to the prob
Codes are clues- not diagnosis!!!! - they are steps on the path- and many are false codes so dont replace parts based just on them

others not living in California can get codes read free at most major parts stores
We get effed by smog laws, dont allow loaning of scanners- but you can buy one~
A shop diagnosing can use whatever it needs!

Do you get any warning lights?

Many times when it slips until you let it sit for a bit, the trans is coming apart and the internal filter is plugged. Letting it sit and relieving the suction lets the junk settle out of the filter and back to the sump.

I'm assuming you've checked the fluid level, right?

Just bought it. 112,000 miles. I think the PO changed it beforeat 60k. Slight burnt smell not too strong. Brown. When I changed the fluid there was lots of gunk on the magnet. No dash light warnings. When it slips, the car shakes then after increased acceleration, it slips like a manual tranny when clutch is out.
When I start the car it drives normal until 1 min then it slips again. Yes, at times it does take 5 seconds for the the gear to engage. Tried taking it to a trans shop for diagnosis and no codes showed. He told me the filter was getting clogged and the soft parts needed to be replaced. Quoted me 3400.

No warning indicator lights. Thats what it seems like its doing because everytime I turn off the car for 15 seconds it'll shift normal again until about 30 seconds to 1 min. The fluid level was fine before I changed it out.

Thanks for the responses guys.
