It can happen for a variety of reasons. Lack of fluid changes can cause the tranmsmission to be improperly lubricated and the clutches then deteriorate. If you don't mind it, how many miles on your trans and when was the last fluid change?

Mmmm I hope that doesn't happen to me. My 2000 blew 3 trannies. i thought they fixed this problem? I just bought an 05 last month. Still under warranty. I feel a moderately hard shift from 1st to 2nd...is that normal? Also happens on downshift from 2 to 1

Our TL's are suppose to be either smooth or firm quick shifts. The way Honda's and Acura's recommend about changing the transmission fluid at 120k is complete BS... Change the fluid every 30k or sooner using the 1 drain and fill method. Also, change out the transmission filter every 30k. Personally, I would change the transmission fluid every 10k to 20k to be on a safe side and fail proof. Waiting too long is just way too risky. Also, I wanted to add that if you are going to use Honda/Acura Z1 transmission fluid then change it out doing the 1 drain and fill method every 10k to 20k. Other fluids like the Redline ATF's D4 or Racing ones tend to last longer like 40k or so.. One of the members (" I hate cars") on here seems pretty knowledgeable about this

This is why. Acura recommends a crazy change interval on a crappy fluid. Even a good fluid should not go 75,000 miles. The crap fluid Acura uses should be changed with every engine oil change. Looks like marketing won that battle.

There are tons of threads on the causes of the failures and the cures.

#1 Change the 3rd and 4th gear pressure switches even on the new transmission. Chances are they carried over all of the external electrical stuff and these are a major cause of failure. Should be replaced every 60,000 miles.

#2 Get the factory Z1 fluid out of there, even in the new trans. Use Redline Racing fluid. If you stick with the factory fluid, change it at every engine oil change. Even with that schedule, you're much better off using Redline with a more sane 40-60,000 mile schedule.

I feel the need to go and get my tranny fluid changed now. I personally haven't had it done in the 12,000 miles I've had the car and have no clue what the previous owner had done.

You can probably be safe changing the Z1 fluid every other oil changes like 10,000 to 20,000 miles. Pressure switches at 60k like IHC had mentioned

It's surely a lot better than waiting on the factory recommended interval. However, it doesn't get rid of one of the fatal flaws of the Z1 fluid. Too much FM. I would buy a fluid with no FM like Redline Racing. Shifts are much quicker but not harsh. This will have a significant positive impact on trans life. It's neat to pull the drain plug at change time and have absolutely nothing on the magnet.

I will probably switch to the redline one as soon as my warranty runs out. I would like to switch to it but afraid of Acura voiding my warranty. My car seems to shift fine I mean it is smooth but quick shifts no shutter..

I have a 2007 TLS and change my Tranny Fluid every 30K at the Acura Dealer. No problems and I have 65K on it. I drive mostly highway miles and don't beat the piss out of it either!

I totally understand. I was afraid at first too. Originally that was my plan but as I learned more and more about the Z1 fluid I had to get it out of there. At 20,000 I switched over to one of Amsoil's non Honda approved fluids and never looked back.

Acura can not void your warranty for using another fluid unless they offer free fluid replacements. It's still scary though because odds are they will try and get out of a free replacement any way they can.

The only thing I want to leave you with is you can see how there are numerous failures on Z1 with fairly low mileage. Not all of them are the fluid's fault but it's not helping any. What made me finally decide to go for it was I didn't want all of that excessive wear going on while it was under warranty and using this fluid greatly reduces the chances of failure at any point it it's life.

As long as your shifts are fairly quick and no bump shifts or shudder, you're probably ok.

You know I had a very interesting conversation with the Acura parts dept last week when I was there getting my front and passenger side motor mounts replaced. He showed me the DW-1 transmission fluid I mean supposely it should be a little better but anyways he was telling me that how the 1999 - 2003 TL transmission's were totally crap and the fact that Honda/Acura had changed out the intervals right at same time to a ridiculous 120k. He was telling me that back in 80's to mid 90's Honda/Acura would recommend 15k change intervals and the trannys used last alot longer like 300k+!!
