Angry Tranny failed on both of my Acura TL :(

I have 99 TL 125k miles, tranny failed last month.
Another one is 05 TL 90k miles, tranny failed 2 days ago.

I called Acura asking on the 05 to see any warranty on the tranny, they said NO. Darn it, Acura left me in the dark for 2 tranny failure in about 1 month.

I don't feel like buying Acura again after loyal to Acura for 15 yrs. 2 tranny failed in a month... that is suck.

Are you doing maintenance when they are suppose to be done? I had a '00 TL and sold it with 190,000 miles and I still see the person who I sold it to around my neighborhood, now I got a 06 and its perfect..

Call Client Services and complain.

They should cover something on the 2005.

yeah because we all know that it is totally normal for an acura to have crappy transmissions.....

OP I would see about a goodwill....90K is way to early for a trans to die......espcially on a car that cost as must as that one did new....

A 35K car should not have powertrain issues requiring a completely new trans that early.

Also it's a known issue, they could at least compensate something.

I'm sure you never changed your transmission fluid or had proper maintenance on both of those Acuras.

My 98 TL with 200k miles still has a perfect running tranny with proper maintenance.

Only way the 05 had a transmission failure is if you're an unlucky person, or you drive it hard with no maintenance at all.

Good luck though.

Fallacy. All parts in a car fall under a bell curve when it comes to quality. He could have followed the maintenance schedule to the T and drove like a grandma, he is not guaranteed any part of that car should last for any given mileage...Just because you have had long term success does not guarantee he will...

Also, as time and mileage go up, so does the possibility of component failure. Its the nature of the beast...

considering the amount of tranny problems the auto TL has, how do know he hasnt done any maintenance on it? Im sure you know as well as I do this tranny is not the most robust and is prone to failure more than most.

I agree, but I doubt the dealership will.

The guy at the dealership is just gonna go by the book: warranty expired, so you must foot the whole bill yourself.

That is why I suggest he call client services, then it isn't up to the dealership. If Acura corporate says to fix it, then the dealer doesn't have a choice in the matter.

I'm wondering if he had an actual failure or something like a shudder that Acura diagnosed as needing a new trans when sensors would likely do.

Proper maintenance was all done. I did not flush the tranny, but drain and fill every 30k, the first time I start drained was 70k miles (on the 05) and 50k miles (on the 99).
I take very good care of the car, run all synthetic oil....
I usually driving fast when start up and RPM when gear shift usually at 3,200RPM. I think that is normal for guys driving.....

I had 92 Acura Legend before and I put 220k miles on it and still run well with original tranny. This is to prove that I take very good care of my car.

Now, if I see an Acura on the road, I talked to myself that....hm... this shiet will have tranny fail pretty soon. (Only a few lucky one have tranny last that long). The 99 TL i just had the tranny rebuilt at local small shop and he did floppy rebuilt job for $900. It is drivable now. THe shop mechanic told me that they have done too many of these cars already.... yes, too many compared to the rest of its class. and lots of them failed before it reach 100k.

So, just to make it clear (to me), you changed the tranny fluid once at 70k miles on the 05 and the tranny died at 90k?

70k miles is way to late to change the trans fluid on these cars. It's past the recommended 60k, which is a joke anyway.

I'd be doing a full 3x3 every 30k miles, I don't care what Acura recommends.

hey, just wanted to let you guys know that my 05 tl is having tranny problems too. it has 55k kms on it. brought it in for that 3rd gear grinding recall. got it back ..then after i got it back, 4th gear started grinding and popping out while driving along with some other gear issues...then brought it back in to get that fixed...
NOW...i have 3rd and 4th gear problems. not to mention sometimes i can't even get into 1st or 2nd gear or even 4th. i have to go into 3rd gear then i can go into first. i am not sure if this is correct or not but, at a complete stop i cannot go into 5th gear or 6th gear. going into reverse is okay but sometimes it's hard to get into 1st 2nd and/or reverse gears.
car is going back in tomorrow.

anyone else having this prob?

^ u shouldn't be able to put your car in 5th or 6th gear while at a complete stop. I think it is designed that way, or atleast i hope it is or we both have issues!! lol.

tranny probs

so the problem got worst

now with the clutch disengaged and not in gear, there is this scraping noise kind of like a spinning grinder or something of the sort. the noise disappears when the clutch is engaged. when that noise isn't happening then the engaging and disengaging the clutch, a thump noise is heard from under the gear box kind of like bass from a subwoofer. then in order to get into gear, if i engage the clutch all the way, i will not be able to get into gear unless i disengage the clutch a little bit from the floor.

i brought my car into the dealership so hopefully they will find a fix or source of the problem. anyone else have any idea or heard of this problem?

Yes Sir.
The Acura suggested change at 60k, but I kinda forgot until 70k. Recently I put 120 miles a day and so the mileage add up too fast.

===Update, I called Acura dealer and told them that I really not happy with Acura tranny that failed like this and leave me in the dark....bla...bla....bla....then finally Acura will replace the tranny for me at 30% of my out of pocket. The tranny cost $4k and I pay $1,200.
I am OK with it. They pay 70%, I think that means they are admitted to have tranny issues on these cars, but they didn't recall it .

I hate to go completely off topic but my best friend is Vietnamese. In all the years I've known him I didn't know he was fluent in the language. We were at a Vietnamese restaurant and he ordered in his native language. I was embarrassed thinking he was mocking the waiter and then to my surprise they started talking back and forth.

Your problems are because an inexperienced tech took apart the trans and put it back together improperly. The 3rd gear problem acura fessed up to and provided a fix for, dealerships can outsource the work or have the right tech work on the job, in your case neither was done.

70K is a long time! The 60K inteval is really long, it should have been changed every 30K at the minimum. Best is a drain and refill every 15K-20K.

As far as a tranny issue, there really isn't one with the 3G TL as long as you maintain it. Honda/Acura is a really good company, they will help you out quite a bit if you are a loyal customer. They do a whole lot of goodwill work and in your case, a 70% discount.

If you want to hear something crazy, Imagine paying nearly 100-130K for a car with a transmission that slams into first so hard that it feels like you've been rear ended... And the manufacturer refuses to do anything.

I'm guessing that's the Bimmer in your sig?

I know it's under warranty but you may consider a GOOD independent. Back when I was in the transmission rebuild industry, we were known for properly diagnosing transmissions and saving people money after the dealer had given up. BMW outsources their units so it's no different to work on than say a Toyota.

I was just at the old Transmission shop last night and the owner was talking about how the dealers don't diagnose problems, the just replace the whole unit at the first sign of trouble. You won't believe how many cars we got after the dealer replaced the trans and it had the exact same problem due to an electrical issue with the car, not the trans.
