Hey guys, any advice or tips on how to attack this surface rust in in the wheel wells? It appears to be just surface at this point.... i hope. Searched the forums but didn't really find what I needed... Any help would be great! Thanks.

how did you even attach photos from your phone? I have an iphone and I never figured that out.

Also, what you can do is sand down the area and put touch up paint.

^^ He's in Milawaukee, so that doesn't help.

OP, you'll need to use some sort of rust inhibitor after it's all sanded away, but before paint. Like the one that someone linked to. Wouldn't hurt to see what a body shop has to say.

It's all the salt on the roads. It'll eat up a car in no time. To the OP, I have dealt with rust plenty of times and can tell you that POR-15 works good. A company called Eastwood also has some stuff called rust encapsulator that works even better but it's a bit pricey. You're just lucky you caught it now because in a few months it could be a lot worse, especially with all the road salt you have where you're at. You might want to check your strut tower area, under the rear bumper and under the side skirts since those areas are prone to rust also.

Kinda depressed seeing this on 3G TL. Was hoping Honda/Acura would have made changes to prevent such rust. I have seen this on a 92 Accord and a 98 Civic one of my family members had. Granted both vehicles were in the mid Atlantic region. I know we can't prevent salt being put on the roads and all, but hate having to deal with rust.

Yeah, the rust starting in the rear wheel wells is undoubtedly the Achilles heal of early Honda and Acuras. Removing the rubber seal strips from the wheel wells on the Hondas that came with them will decelerate the rust process since that strip acts as a safe haven for salt and promotes corrosion. Also, regularly washing underneath the lip where salt and other road contaminants sit on will hinder rust growth. My S2000 even had this problem on the passenger quarter. I stopped it, though, just before it made any progress.

This is why I am very adamant of purchasing a car on the west coast or a specific region that does not use salt as the primary solution for winters.

I think when I was posting I just went to "manage attachments" below the post box, made sure my photos were in the camera roll, and attached. IT wouldn't let me attach more then 1 at a time though... hence the 2 posts.

Thanks for the response too!

I know right... fucking midwest winters.

Every single Honda vehicle I have owned has suffered from this. The worst being my 1990 Legend. The overall body of the car was amazing! The wheel wells looked like something out of a horror movie though... My 93 accord, my 88 accord LXi hatch etc etc. All of them.

So, am I to sand down and prime before I use the POR 15, or can I be lazy and just slop it on there real quick like :p ;
I feel like the sanding and removing any and all cancer would help me sleep better at night.

Thanks for all the responses guys, feels good to have such a fantastic car PLUS a thriving community to be a part of.

Yes, sand off as much rust as you can. I would use start with 800 grit, 1000, and ending with 1500 grit. Wear gloves and proper covered clothing, as it is difficult to remove from the skin, and not to mention harmful. My brother used POR 15 on his Integra, and after a year from applying it, it has maintained protection as proclaimed by the company.

Much easier: visit a paint/ body shop supply place, my local NAPA store has a section inside that sells paint/ body stuff.

3M rust-proofing 08892 18oz followed by / 3M undercoat 08883 19oz

both are spray cans - actually I used the rust-proofing on my 98 Chevy 4x4 where the old undercoat had worn away and the undercarriage was rusted - 2 snowy/ salted winters ago, never got around to using the 3M undercoat (lazy) - still good, no additional rust. That is, I simply brushed away any loose rust, then sprayed w/ the rust-proofing stuff (again lazy).

The rust-proofing has a red straw, like WD40, etc. for pin point application, into seams, etc., or use without for larger areas.

My car is a Milwaukee car as well, I've got something similar going on with mine only on one side but not quite as bad. I think it's saveable but I was really considering selling it. If I don't get my new car, I've got to por-15 it because another winter for my TL might not be pretty.

This is where my car is starting to show signs of corrosion, It's just barely showing orange color but I know it's going to start if I let it go!

Legit, sounds exactly the same as mine. Let me know when you end up doing the por15 treatment, not sure when I'll get to mine actually... Where in the Mil are you?
