TL-S tranny in a base model?

Hiya folks!

I seem to have a bit of an unusual situation... I recently tried to replace the CV axles on my 2007 TL base model, but the passenger's side axle didn't fit! Turns out that the old axle has 29 splines, and the new axle had 27 splines. I did some research and it seems that the trans apparently has been replaced with a Type-S trans, and requires a different CV axle on the passenger's side. My question is... can the Type-S tranny be a direct bolt-in with the original 3.2L engine? The trans is the 5sp. automatic.

Any info would be most welcome. Thanks!

07/08 base and type s auto are the same. Your axels are the problem. Im by no means a trans expert but the 07/08 base and type s have the same auto trans.

Interesting. I double checked the axle that I had gotten from the auto parts store, and it is indeed the correct axle, it's for the base model with the 3.2L engine, which is what I have. However the axle physically does not fit into the tranny, which led me to do some investigating. That's when I noticed that the ID of the axle is smaller, and has 2 less splines in it. For the passenger's side CV axle, there's 2 different ones, one for the Base, and one for the Type-S. The driver's side axle is the same on both models. Weird.

Ok, I guess I just bite the bullet and get myself a Type-S axle and call it a day. Thanks for the response!

Well, since two peeps have confirmed that the '07 base models run the same tranny as the Type-S models, that would explain the need for the Type-S passenger's side CV axle.

Wonder why all the auto parts places show that there's two CV axles available? Perhaps it's because they just have it in their system that '04-'08 model years would all be the same, which in the case of '07-'08 trannys, is not the case, it seems.

Consider this case closed, and thanks both of you for the responses.

The aftermarket axles at auto parts stores for the TLs are garbage, I saw some people post that they weren't even the right length or were missing the harmonic dampener that is on the OEM axle.

When I replaced mine I went with raxles, should check them out they refurbish OEM axles, use these really thick CV boots that are really nice and pack them with synthetic grease.

It's a lot cheaper than going with OEM axles for the auto trans and IMO better quality than OEM.

Try laying the new and old axle next to eachother since you have both out and take a look at all the differences.

It ended up needing the Type-S CV axle. I installed the new Type-S CV axle and all is well. I just found it odd that all the auto parts stores stock two separate CV axles for the passenger's side, if the 07-08 TL Base and Type-S models are using the same tranny. Didn't make sense to me.

The old CV axle and the new CV axle for the base model are the exact same length, and look exactly the same, only difference is that the I.D. on the hub on the end that fits onto the tranny itself on the old axle is larger and has more splines than the new axle.
