Thumbs up TL-S in shop-steering rack help!!!!

Serious question for everyone here, MY 2007 TL TYPE-S is at the acura dealer in the shop.

The Technician there confirmed that the steering rack and pinions have are bad and needs to be replaced its gonna cost about $5200+ to fix everything.

My Warranty company USAA said they will fix it. But they need to have an explanation as to what could've caused the issue and the Technician is scratching his head trying to find a GREAT reason as to what could've caused it to go bad so that USAA will fix it for me. He's just trying his best to help me so i don't have to come out of pocket $5200+.

Any ideas, thoughts, or opinions besides "old age and mileage" as to what could cause the steering rack and pinions to go bad.

I greatly appreciate it.

unfortunately, any way you spin it, it will sound bad on you.

the warranty company should fix it, as thats what the warranty is there for.

$5200!!! does that include a new transmission? Put the burden of the explanation on the tech, you should not be expected to be versed in this knowledge. You just pay the insurance premiums. I would say it must be a defective rack.

That's what I was saying and usaa sent out their own inspector he saw as well that it was bad, and he saw it was bad and couldn't think of a reason either to give to usaa.
Sucks,

$5200 or $520? Something doesn't sound right. What else are they replacing?

No its $5200 that includes parts and labor they claim it takes about 6 hours to remove the rack and pinions, then about 6 hours to install the new gear. so 12 hours or labor is $95.99 per hr = 1151.88.

So new rack, pinions, tie rod ends. he didn't break down the prices for each of those yet. I'll have to get that tomorrow.

Exactly when the warranty company clearly says that it is covered. But if they don't honor it i'll see where to go from there the BBB or something. I'm gonna keep you all posted though

lol thats exactly what i was just doing
OK so
1. Pinion Assy auto trans 321.83
2. pinion valve 273.12
3. they mentioned steering gear 452.28
4. P/S PUMP TL; 3.5L POWER 435.45
5. Steering rack 325.18
6. Labor 1151.88

= $2959.74

So whatever kind of adding that service advisor doing unless something hes not telling me does not add up

Jware-I totally agree, and thought that first price quote was kinda high. Let us know what they say.

$5200?!?!?!?

They are definitely throwing something else in there.

Also, i don't know if you have any extra cash, because you might as well change your sway bar bushings.

Yeah exactly and i would fix it I'll do any other part on my car except steering. If it comes down to it i'll do it and start with the steering rack and get an alignment and go from there.
